This paper examines the use of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) method to classify sites as soft or hard ground based on shear wave velocity. MASW was performed at two sites, one in Pulau Pinang characterized by soft soil deposits, and one in Perlis consisting of hard limestone and sandstone bedrock. Results found that MASW can effectively measure the spatial distribution of shear wave velocity to depths of 30 meters, allowing classification of sites according to standard systems. This provides an efficient method for seismic site characterization over large areas.
