Arts Therapies and Gender Issues offers international perspectives on gender in
arts therapies research and demonstrates understandings of gender and arts
therapies in a variety of global contexts. Analysing current innovations and
approaches in the arts therapies, it discusses issues of cultural identity, which
intersect with sex, gender norms, stereotypes and sexual identity.

ing discipline of creative writing for therapeutic purposes, re-enactment

About the editor
Professor Susan Hogan is Professor in Cultural Studies and Art Therapy at
the University of Derby, in which role for many years she facilitated experien-
tial workshops and the closed-group component of the art therapy training. She
is former Vice-President of the Australian National Art Therapy Association
(formerly ANATA, now ANZATA), and has twice served as a regional co-
ordinator for the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). She has been
instrumental in setting up, or helping to set up, several art therapy-training
courses in Australia and the UK and also courses in dance-movement and
drama therapy. She served for six years as a Health Professions Council (UK)
‘visitor’ (now HCPC).
Susan qualified as an art therapist in 1985. Her PhD in Cultural History
from Aberdeen University, Scotland looked at the history of ideas on mad-
ness and the use of the arts, especially within psychiatry. She has a particular
interest in group-work and experiential learning, following early employment
with Peter Edwards MD, an exceptional psychiatrist who had worked with
Maxwell Jones, a psychiatrist who is associated with the ‘therapeutic commu-
nity movement’ in Britain.
Susan is a Professorial Fellow of the Institute of Mental Health of the
University of Nottingham where she is co-researching health humanities,
and has been conducting research with several partner institutions, includ-
ing co-researching women’s experience of ageing with sociologists from the
University of Sheffield using visual research methods. She has also published
a number of both scholarly and polemical papers on women and theories of
insanity. Hogan’s work has been innovative in its application of social anthro-
pological and sociological ideas to art therapy; also distinctive is her unwaver-
ing challenge to reductive psychological theorising.

Contributors
Sue Baines is an instructor in the Bachelor of Music Therapy programme at
Capilano University in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. Her music therapy
practice supports persons in long-term care, acute psychiatry, and commu-
nity mental health. Sue is editor-in-chief for The Canadian Journal of Music
Therapy. Throughout her career, she has focused on increasing social justice
in music therapy practice, research and publication. Her research integrates
anti-oppressive practice theory with music therapy.
Jamie Bird is the Deputy Head of Centre for Health and Social Care Research
at the University of Derby. He is an art therapist and arts-based researcher
who has an interest in the study of experiences of migration and of domestic
violence and abuse through the employment of the arts. He is also interested
in generating quantitative data that measures the effectiveness of art psycho-
therapy and the impact of educational approaches to managing risk behav-
iour. He has been involved in the teaching of undergraduate, postgraduate
and doctoral students within the subjects of therapeutic arts and creative
expressive therapies for 14 years.
Susan M. D. Carr is an art therapist, artist, and researcher, with 12 years’
experience working as an art therapist in palliative care, helping clients
resolve issues around illness and self-identity. Since completing her PhD
in 2015 Susan has published a book of her thesis entitled Portrait Therapy,
exploring the theory and practice behind her development of this innovative
intervention. In 2017 Susan’s work attracted a grant from the Arts Council
England, to stage her first major exhibition, including 38 of the portraits
generated by the project, at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Susan is
currently Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Art Therapy and a
member of Council for the British Association of Art Therapists.
Job Cornelissen is a Dutch dance-movement psychotherapist with elderly
people with dementia, people with young onset dementia, geriatric psy-
chiatric patients, and multiple sclerosis patients and their partners in mul-
tidisciplinary treatment. He also works as a dancer and choreographer in
community dance projects with the elderly. He holds a Sandan (3rd dan)
