Preface
Artificial intelligence (AI) represents one of the most important developments of
our times. The scale of possibilities that AI seems to be promising across fields
anddomainsisvast.AndyetthecomplexityofAI,atechnologyafterall,makesit
a subject of both elated expectations and contestation. AI belongs to the group of
conceptsthatwhilebroadlyusedinthedominantdiscourse,remainvaguelyunder-
stood. This applies not only to the mechanisms underlying AI, including artificial
neuralnetworks,unsupervisedmachinelearning,deeplearning,algorithms,etc.,but
alsototheutilizationofAIinourdailylives.ThelimitsofAI’sutilizationremain
unrecognized,andtheconstraintsAI’sdevelopmentfacesarerarelytalkedabout.In
asimilarmanner,alltoofrequently,thediscussiononAIfailstohighlighttherange

ThisinturnallowsasoberdiscussiononwhatAIis,whatitisnot,howitisapplied,
and what the contingencies and contentious issues relating to AI are. This is what
thisbookisabout.Clearly,thecontentofthebookdoesnotexhaustthetopic.Never-
theless, it offers a very useful and versatile insight into a range of issues that are
centraltoourunderstandingofAIanditsimpactonoursocieties.

who, once again, proved to be most kind and most professional. In this context,
our personal ‘thank you’ is extended to Dr. Hisako Niko. We would also like to
expressourgratitudetothereviewerswhoofferedveryusefulinsightsintohowthe
