Tolkien begon in de jaren dertig enthousiast aan Arthurs val en liet het zelfs lezen aan een goede vriend, die hem aanmoedigde het af te schrijven. Zeer waarschijnlijk heeft de publicatie van <i>De hobbit</i> in 1937 ervoor gezorgd dat Tolkien het gedicht nooit heeft afgemaakt, hoewel in een brief uit 1955 staat dat 'hij hoopte een lang gedicht over Arthurs val af te maken'.
