L’introduction reprend brièvement les hypothèses relatives à l’authenticité et à la datation de l’œuvre pour trancher en faveur d’une rédaction entre l’archontat de Képhisophon et 322 avant J.-C. L’analyse du traitement des sources, tant pour la partie historique que pour la partie contemporaine d’Aristote, est particulièrement riche d’enseignements, notamment quant à l’influence d’Hérodote et de Thucydide sur le Stagirite. « Une méthode » aristotélicienne est dégagée et mise en perspective avec certains passages de la Politique. L’histoire du texte est relatée de manière synthétique tandis que des notes accompagnent la lecture. Le texte est en outre enrichi d’un Index.
