Behalve liefdesaffaires zorgden ook politieke meningsverschillen voor conflicten tussen familieleden. De lezer krijgt een aardig beeld van het achttiende-eeuwse Engeland. Het boek blijft boeien, hoewel de vertaling soms wat stroef leest en enkele verklarende noten voor Nederlandse lezers verhelderend zouden zijn geweest.
