The ‘House in the Clouds’ at Thorpeness is a
similar case. The house part is in a funny
place. In fact the house part is not a house
but was built as a water tank, and the part
underneath as the house. Except that this is
no longer true... for the community no
longer needed the tank and they came in with
the oxyaceteline burners and put a house
back into the tank. Sort it out in your mind,
this is a culture that is desperate to redis-
cover values and criteria in architecture!
| like things of this ilk and was therefore
quite ready to respond when the Leo Castelli
Gallery had its ‘Follies’ show. The ‘Lantern
from Secret Blue’ is almost certainly near to
the sea, and located a short distance from
the house and almost certainly viewable from
the terrace. ‘How lovely, a sweet little white
tower,’ murmurs the weekend visitor. ‘I’m
sure you get a marvellous view of the sea.’
But if the visitor can be persuaded to walk
down to the tower, into the tower and climb
“Slowly up to experience the total surround of
blue — a strong Klein-like blue — and clutch
onto the evermore eccentric profile of the
handrail, he (or she) will of course emerge
and, yes, have a perfect view of the sea. The
spookiness of the inside against the bland-
ness of the outside has to be read against
the issues of assumption and discovery,
obviousness and actuality ...1 can’t stand
the full frontal approach to architecture,
which is why | found Post-Modernism
such a yawn.
