Several years ago, I found I had learned my lesson. Whether taking on a
small renovation project or building a new

levers, and locks are the working pieces in our
homes. Whether it’s a hinge that swings a door
or a latch that opens a cupboard, these gadgets
keep our homes in motion, allowing us to navi-
gate through them. In this section, we’ll explore
the practical aspects of architectural hardware:
the what, why, and how of choosing, finishing,
and installing hardware. We’ll also discover the
history of hardware through the ages and which
style of hardware is appropriate for which
house design.
