From the humble beginnings of the Florida Baptist Institute at Live Oak and the
Florida Baptist Academy at Jacksonville came these Founders whose vision and
insight led to where we stand now as crusaders for and promoters of Christian
principals, academic excellence, and service to humanity.
Founded in 1879, Florida Memorial College is the result of the dedication of two
forward thinking Baptist organizations - the Florida Baptist Academy and the
Florida Baptist Institute - who founded the institution with the hope of educating
African-American students in the latter part of the 19th Century.
Today, Florida Memorial College is South Florida's only Historically Black College,
and continues to give students an opportunity to change their lives. In this, our 21st
Century, Florida Memorial College has embarked on a journey marked by a multi-
faceted program of academic excellence, historically-based spirituality, and a
futuristic attitude toward preparing our students for the challenges they face in an
ever-increasing technological world.
