High Purity Magnesia for Chemical Applications
DSP is unique among magnesia producers in that it operates the Aman thermal decomposition
process to obtain magnesium oxide and derivative products" This thermal decomposition process
yields the purest magnesium oxide materials that is available on an industrial scale from any
source"
In the thermal decomposition route to magnesia! highly concentrated solutions derived from
the pure brines of the Dead Sea are subjected to high temperatures at which magnesium chloride
is converted into magnesium oxide" This initial product is further refined to a range of magnesia
materials by processes of hydration! washing and particle sizing! followed by drying or calcination"
The thermal decomposition route to magnesia avoids the use of the raw materials & lime or
burnt dolomite & that are required in the conventional precipitation routes to magnesia" As a
consequence! DSP magnesia products are characterized by extremely low levels of those impurities
that derive from the lime or dolomite used in the precipitation route" Levels of iron! silica and
alumina in DSP products are often lower by two orders of magnitude than those in magnesia
derived from the reactions of lime or dolomite" The levels of trace metals! such as manganese
and chromium! are negligible compared with conventional sources of magnesia! and the calcium
content is typically a tenth of that in magnesia from precipitation processes"
This high purity is exploited in the chemical applications in which DSP’s magnesia products are
used"
The relative absence of calcium in DSP’s magnesia products avoids unwanted formation
of insoluble calcium analogues! resulting in considerable process simplification and
economies"
The relative absence of silica and alumina results in the reduction of insoluble impurities
in the final product"
The low levels of iron and other transition metals avoid the formation of undesired by&
products in side&reactions and possible sources of color formation"
DSP’s high purity products are available in a range of particle sizing and reactivity! generally
characterized by surface area measurement" This enables the choice of
Highly reactive magnesia grades where the other reagents are inherently possessed of
low reactivity! or
Low&reactivity grades where the rate of reaction must be slowed down because of the
high reactivity of the other reagents"
DSP’s magnesia products find application in:
The production of magnesium derivatives for oil and fuel additives"
The synthesis of magnesium compounds for food and pharmaceutical applications"
The manufacture of detergents! catalysts and liquid fertilizers"
Mining and mineral recovery"
A whole host of other chemical uses"
DSP’s production capability is characterized by wide flexibility in the design of products tailor
made to meet the requirements of specific customer objectives"

Hard Burned
Technical Grade
Magnesium Oxide
DESCRIPTION MagChem® 10 grades are high purity technical grades of magnesium oxide processed from
magnesium-rich brine. They have relatively high density and low reactivity. The granular grades are
essentially dust free.
USES
Milled MagChem 10 grades have a combination of low reactivity, high purity and fine particle size,
which makes them suitable for the production of magnesium salts, particularly in reaction with
strong acids. Milled MagChem 10 grades also find applications in fiberglass, aluminum metal
processing and fuel additives. Screened MagChem 10 products are widely used as a raw material
in manufacturing refractories and ceramic products.
COMPOSITION Typical Specifications
Magnesium Oxide (MgO), % 98.2 97.0 min.
Calcium Oxide (CaO), % 0.9 1.0 max.
Silicon Oxide (SiO), % 0.4 0.5 max.
2
Iron Oxide (FeO), % 0.2 0.3 max.

MagChem 10 grades are available in a wide variety of screened and milled sizes, from a
powder minus 325 mesh to a granular 6 X 16 mesh. Loose bulk densities range from 65 to
120 lb/ft3.

Technical Grade
Magnesium Oxide
MagChem® 10CR is a high purity, technical grade of magnesium oxide
DESCRIPTION
produced from magnesium-rich brine. MagChem 10CR is carefully
controlled during the calcination and milling steps to provide a consistent
reactivity from lot-to-lot.
USES MagChem 10CR is especially designed for applications where a consistent
reactivity is required. MagChem 10CR is recommended for applications
involving phosphate reactions such as dental investment, ceiling or wall tiles
and quick-setting cement. Another major application for MagChem 10CR is
in chrome-based leather tanning.
