Direct river abstraction River Wissey / Cut off Channel (WTW extension) x CAMS - Cut off Channel subject to WFD no N
deterioration.
River Heach Subject to CAMS x CAMS resource availability - no water available, N T6a
therefore this option does not address the
problem
River Ingol Subject to CAMS x CAMS resource availability - water available at N T6a
higher river flows. The published CAMS documents
have been used to identify potential areas of river
abstraction based on the existing water resource
availability. However, the CAMS documents that
were used in this review are, in several cases,
considered out-dated since a republication is due
within the next year. For the River Ingol where the
preliminary low flow resource availability status of
the river reach is ‘water available’ it is overridden
to ‘no water available’ in order to indicate that
additional abstraction will only be allowed where it
does not make the position within the critical unit
any worse. Therefore there is a high risk that the
option would fail before implementation
North Norfolk Rivers Subject to CAMS x CAMS resource availability - no water available, N T6a
therefore this option does not address the
problem
Gaywood River Subject to CAMS x CAMS resource availability - no water N T6a
available/over-licensed , therefore this option does
not address the problem
New reservoir storage On-stream reservoirs None There are no suitable valleys for an
impounding reservoir
Pumped-storage reservoirs Feltwell (Trent-Rutland-Ouse transfer) A feasible option but not taken through to Stage 2 Y T1d
as would need to be developed as part of long
term strategy To be considered in the WREA
North Norfolk Rivers (winter storage) Yield, location, timing of delivery x Within the North Norfolk AONB. Low flows and N T1e
likely high HOF suggest that scheme would have
minimum yield. Therefore there is a high risk that
the option would fail before implementation.
Wash Reservoirs Yield, location, timing of delivery x Due to the environmental sensitivity of the Wash N T1d
there is a high risk of failure. This option could be
considered in the WREA
Flood storage Wash Barrage Yield, timing of delivery x Due to the environmental sensitivity of the Wash N T10c
there is a high risk of failure.
New IDB structure Yield, location, timing of delivery x x Uncertainty of reliability, quantity and quality of N T10a
resource. Therefore high risk of failure and
solution not addressing the problem. To be
considered in the WREA
SUDS - recharge lagoons Yield, location, timing of delivery x x Uncertainty of reliability, quantity and quality of N T10b
resource. Therefore high risk of failure and
solution not addressing the problem
Reservoir raising None There are no reservoirs to raise
Groundwater sources Sandringham Sands Subject to CAMS x CAMS Review - no water available (Heach). Water N T6b
available (Ingol) but "Economic gains from the
relatively small quantities of water which might be
available, are outweighed by the environmental
risks to a small river which is highly dependent on
the underlying Chalk strata”. Therefore there is a
high risk of failure that the option would fail before
implementation.
Nitrate removal/revised blending regime x No WTW output constrained by blending scheme. N T4e
Therefore this option does not address the
problem
H4 Hunstanton groundwater development Y T4c
Infiltration galleries None No suitable sites
Artificial Storage and Recovery Sandringham Sands x x ASR scheme has been discounted due to risk of N T8a
wells (or ‘Aquifer Storage and clogging due to fine sands, risk of changes in
Recharge’) (ASR) water quality, potential for recharge water loss and
distance to the potential recharge source.
Options Appraisal Report
Appendix B.1 Unconstrained Options - Fenland
Aquifer Recharge (AR) North Norfolk Rivers (central Norfolk) x CAMS5 states no available surface water. N T8c
Recharge to the coastal Crag and the Chalk using
treated effluent could be possible, but would
require a site by site assessment to determine if
there is sufficient head room and permeability.
However the discharged effluent must be of
sufficient quality to protect groundwater quality,
and such discharges would be subject to an
Environmental Permit (NEP) and risk assessment.
Will be considered further in WREA.

Shared asset ownership Multi use reservoir (agriculture) Resource availability, yield, WQ Concerns over resilience in a drought and control N T13
over raw water quality. To be considered in WREA
and the Defra Wissey pilot study.
Tankering of water H5 Hunstanton tankering (road) x x Due to the high numbers of tanker deliveries per N T15
day down narrow country roads will be difficult to
justify given the potential for disruption of local
traffic. High WQ risks. Therefore the option is
considered not promotable with a high risk of
failure before implementation
