Introduction
Welcome to the 1991 Acorn Education Directory. This
edition of the Directory includes details of more than a
thousand software packages, interfaces and dedicated
peripherals available to educational users of Acorn
computers.
As the leading supplier of computers to education for more
than ten years, Acorn are privileged to be able to draw on
an extraordinary base of educational software specifically
designed to meet the requirements of U K education. In
creating this Directory, we have drawn on the advice of our
many friends and colleagues to select software to meet the
varying needs of schools and colleges.
The products listed include a wide variety of productivity
tools and general purpose applications that can be used
across all curriculum areas, specialised curriculum packages
designed for use within individual subjects or perhaps
within the primary age range, and administrative and
management systems for teacher or institutional support.
The Directory has been designed to be used as flexibly as
possible. Both contents tables and indices are provided to
enable you to find software by subject area, by product
name or by the company that produces it. Information is
also provided on price, availability and where each package
can be obtained. We will be seeking to make the Directory
more useful and usable with each edition, and so would
welcome suggestions from any reader on how we can
improve its organisation and layout.
Creating a Directory such as this one is a trying job because
it can never be complete. As soon as it is published, it will
be out of date because new software is appearing all the
time. Nor can such a publication ever be both really useful
and truly exhaustive - for instance, we have not generally
included games here unless they are considered to have
educational value - and so it is inevitable that we will have
overlooked some packages that should have been included.
If there is any software package that you feel should be
included in the next edition, please let us know on the card
provided at the back of the Directory.
Acorn is aware of the extraordinary potential that
computers offer to enhance the quality of teaching and
learning already on offer within UK schools and colleges.
We trust that this Directory will be a useful tool in
developing this potential to the full.

How to use
this Directory
Our aim in designing this Directory was to help you to find
the information you want as quickly and easily as possible.
We hope you find its format helpful in this way.
The Directory consists of a Directory at a Glance support
ing the Complete Directory. There are also Company and
Product indices.
The Directory at a Glance section gathers all the products
in the directory into categories, both educational and
generic, and within these categories lists all the products by
name. This section will lead directly into the Complete
Directory for further information on the products.
In the Complete Directory you will find Company details
and with product descriptions, information on prices, site
licences and networking.
Finally, the two indices list company names and product
names. Each index is in alphabetical order; entries refer
you to the relevant sections in the Complete Directory.
Terminology
In the Complete Directory references are made to ruse OS
Compliant, Compatible or Coexistent software. The
definitions of these terms are set out below:-
ruSC OS COMPLIANT - those applications which run in
the desktop and closely follow the ruse OS guidelines.
ruse OS COMPATIBLE - those applications which can be
loaded from the desktop and have a quit option which
returns the user to the desktop with no change to his/her
machine's configuration.
ruse OS COEXISTENT - those applications which will
run in a machine with ruse OS but which fit into neither
of the above categories.
