Auf seiner Suche nach dem Mörder stößt er auf die unterschiedlichsten Menschen und deren mögliche Motive: auf festlichen Gelagen in der Gilde der Schwarzhäupter, in prächtigen Kaufmannshäusern, im Kloster der Dominikanermönche und in zweifelhaften Kneipen außerhalb der Stadtmauern. Einen zentralen Platz im Geschehen nimmt die gotische St. Olaikirche mit ihren alten, mystischen Legenden ein damals einer der höchsten Türme der Welt.<br>Kaum scheint der Apotheker der Lösung ein Stückchen näher zu sein, als der Mörder erneut zuschlägt und neue Rätsel aufgibt. War es jedes Mal Mord oder etwa Selbstmord? Unkonventionelle Mittel wie z.B. ein Schachspiel und unvollständige Gedichtstrophen helfen dem Apotheker zum Ziel zu kommen, er fügt die Bruchstücke des Rätsels zusammen und stellt so den tatsächlichen Täter bloß. Der Mörder scheint gefasst und der Fall abgeschlossen doch am Ende des Romans wartet eine weitere Überraschung...</span>
