Preface
At present, we are running out of antibiotics, and despite the
presence of current antibiotics, bacterial infectious diseases are
the leading causes of death worldwide. Antibiotics have served
humanity by saving human life from severe bacterial infections.
Also, antibiotics play a pivotal role in medical and surgical pro­
cesses involving complex immune-suppressive regimes, particularly
in chemotherapy for cancer treatments and organ transplants.
Bacteria have evolved several antimicrobial resistance mechanisms
through which they can either chemically modify the antibiotics or
pump the antibiotics out of their system, rendering the therapeutic
procedures ineffective. There is a global increase in drug-tolerant
bacteria, which, combined with the absence of novel antimicrobial
targets, has raised a sense of emergency in public health man­
agement, reasoned to the increase in life-threatening situations. In
addition to the rise in the number of deaths, the problem of antibi­
otic resistance has imposed a significant economic burden on the
healthcare system and patients. The rate of identification of novel
antibiotics is much slower than the rate of evolution of antimi­
crobial resistance. Therefore, there is a need for alternate novel
strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance. One of the strate­
gies that could bring about pivotal change is behavioural change.
Thus, in this book, we emphasize that in addition to the obliga­
tion to develop novel antimicrobials, there is an immediate need
for awareness about antimicrobial resistance among the popula­
tion. The topics on global initiatives to combat AMR will assist
the readers in understanding the concerted approach taken by the
world communities. We further discuss the effectiveness of educa­
tion in behavioural change to fight AMR. The book also details
the difficulties in implementing global initiatives to prevent AMR.
