This book had its origins in a conference sponsored by the Institute of
Jewish Affairs (IJA), London, the Centre for the Study of International
Antisemitism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Programme
for the Study of Political Extremism and Antisemitism, Tel Aviv Univer
sity. The conference took place a number of years ago and was organised
by Michael May, then Assistant Director of the IJA and now its Director.
Since that time a number of contributions have been added and others
amended, revised and updated where possible, to take account of more
recent developments. The editor would like to thank the Institute's former
Director, Dr Stephen J. Roth, and his dedicated staff for their support in
bringing this project to completion. He is especially grateful to Antony
Lerman, Director of Research at the Institute, for his invaluable assistance
in overcoming the editorial and organisational problems which occurred en

Notes on the Contributors
Shlomo A vineri is Herbert Samuel Professor of Political Science at the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A former Director General of the Israeli
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, his books include Israel and the Palestinians
(1976) and The Making of Modern Zionism: The Intellectual Origins of the
Jewish State (1981).
Yehuda Bauer is Professor of Holocaust Studies and Chairman of the Vidal
Sassoon International Centre for the Study of Antisemitism at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. Among his books are From Diplomacy to Re
sistance: A History of Jewish Palestine I939-1945 (1973), American Jewry
and the Holocaust: The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
1939-1945 (1981) and A History of the Holocaust (1982).
David Cesarani is Lecturer in Politics at Queen Mary College, University
of London. He is a specialist in the history of Zionism in Britain.
Theodore H. Friedgut is Associate Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies
at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a member of the International
Advisory Board of Soviet Jewish Affairs. He is the author of Political
Participation in the USSR (1979).
Zvi Gitelman is Professor in the Department of Political Science at the
University of Michigan and has been Director of its Centre for Russian and
East European Studies. He is the author of Jewish Nationality and Soviet
Politics (1972), Becoming Israelis: Political Resocialization of Soviet and
American Immigrants (1982) and A Century of Ambivalence: Jews in
Russia and the Soviet Union (1988).
Julius Gould held the Chair of Sociology in the University of Nottingham
from 1964 to 1987. A member of the Editorial Board of Patterns of
Prejudice, he has written widely on aspects of Jewish society, including
Jewish Commitment: A Study in London (1984), and co-edited, with Shaul
Esh, Jewish Life in Modern Britain (1964).
Raphael Israeli is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Asian and African
Studies, a Fellow of the Truman Research Institute and Director of the
Centre for Pre-Academic Studies, all at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. Among other works he is the author of 'I, Egypt': Aspects of
President Anwar Al-Sadat's Political Thought (1981) and Peace is in the Eye
of the Beholder (1985).

Antony Lerman is Director of Research, Institute of Jewish Affairs,
London and Editor of Patterns of Prejudice. He is the Editor of The Jewish
Communities of the World: A Contemporary Guide (1989) and Assistant
Editor of the annual Survey of Jewish Affairs.
Natan Lerner is Visiting Associate Professor in International Law at Tel
Aviv University and Director of the International Centre for University
Teaching of Jewish Civilisation, Jerusalem. He has written many articles
on the Jewish position in Latin America and is the author of a commen
tary, The UN Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Racial
Discrimination (1980).
Ronald L. Nettler is a Fellow in Muslim-Jewish Relations in the modern
period at the Oxford Centre for Postgraduate Hebrew Studies. His pub
lications include studies and articles on contemporary Islamic religious
doctrine on the Jews and Israel, and he is the author of Past Trials and
Present Tribulations: A Muslim Fundamentalist View of the Jews (1987).
Earl Raab is the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations
Council of the San Francisco area and has taught at the University of
California, Berkeley and at San Francisco State College. He co-authored
The Politics of Unreason: Right-Wing Extremism in America I970-I977
(1978) with Seymour Martin Lipset and is the author of Major Social
Problems (1964).
Barry Rubin is a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of Johns Hopkins
School of Advanced International Studies in Washington DC, and a
specialist on Third World dictatorships. He is the author of The Great
Powers in the Middle East I94I-I947. The Road to the Cold War (1980),
Paved With Good Intentions: The American Experience in Iran (1980) and
co-editor, with Walter Laqueur, of The Israel-Arab Reader: A Documen
tary History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict (1985).
Emmanuel Sivan is Professor of History at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem and Editor of the Jerusalem Quarterly. He has published numer
ous articles on Islamic fundamentalism and is the author of Radical Islam:
Medieval Theology and Modern Politics (1985).
Norman Solomon is Director of the Centre for the Study of Judaism and
Jewish-Christian Relations at Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham, England
and Editor of Christian Jewish Relations.
Robert S. Wistrich is Professor of European History and holds the Erich
Neuberger Chair in Modern Jewish History at the Hebrew University of
