PREFACE
1993 ANTELOPE HUNTING AND HARVEST REPORT
Survey Approach
Resident and nonresident antelope license holders were randomly sampled
from our license database. Hunting and harvest data were acquired via
telephone for resident license holders and via a mail survey for
nonresidents.
Definitions
NUMBER ISSUED.The total number of licenses issued or the number
of license holders when an individual could have
two or more licenses
HUNTERS.The number of hunters who hunted one or more days
HUNTER DAYS.Sum of whole days or portions of days hunted
PERCENT SUCCESS.The number of hunters who killed one or more
antelope divided by the total number of hunters and
multiplied by 100
LOWER.Lower confidence limit at a level of confidence of
80 percent
POINT.The estimated value
UPPER.Upper confidence limit at a level of confidence of
80 percent
SP.An abbreviation for special license
SP 700-00.License holders of 700-00 region 7 multi-district
either sex licenses only who did not also hold the
unlimited, multi-district, doe/fawn licenses for
regions 4, 6 and 7
SP 900-00.Multi-district archery only license holders
DOE/FAWN.License holders of the unlimited, multi-district,
doe/fawn antelope licenses valid in regions 4, 6 and
7 including those doe/fawn license holders who also
held an either sex license valid in a specific
hunting district within these regions
SPECIAL.Used in regional or state summary pages to indicate
total of all special licenses except the 700-00,
900-00, or DOE/FAWN license holders which are
reported separately
UNKWN.A symbol for unknown used to designate unknown sex
TOTAL HARVEST.Estimated total kill for all age/sex classes
Explanations
The antelope hunting and harvest statistics are estimates made from a
sample of 21,188 questionnaires representing about 36% of all 58,325
antelope license holders. Confidence-interval estimates are given for
hunters, hunter days, and total harvest. Confidence intervals are
given at the 80 percent confidence level, meaning that the actual value
will be between the lower and upper limit in four out of five cases.
The relative precision of the estimate increases with the size of the
estimate. Regional estimates have greater relative precision than
district estimates and the statewide estimates have the greatest
relative precision.

All estimates represented are rounded to the nearest whole number. It
is for this reason that rows and columns do not always agree exactly
with row or column totals given.
The availability of an additional multi-regional license type, the
unlimited, multi-district, doe/fawn antelope license, valid in regions
4, 6 and 7, had an effect on the analysis methodology and interpretation
for these regions. Most of these licenses were purchased by sportsmen
who already held one of the either sex antelope licenses issued through
the drawing. Survey populations were always antelope license holders (a
person who held one or more antelope licenses) rather than individual
antelope license types. This was done to avoid duplication of hunters
and hunter days estimates. The doe/fawn license holder population
contained all doe/fawn license holders and included those doe/fawn
license holders who also held an either sex license for a specific
district. They were surveyed using the more general multi-district
questionnaire. Kills made on the either sex license were included with
this group. Any multi-district doe/fawn license holder who had an
either sex license for a specific district in region 4, 6 or 7 was
removed from the survey population of district-specific either sex
licenses. These people were then added to the multi-district doe/fawn
population. For this reason, the "NUMBER ISSUED" column in the report
for the either sex license types in regions 4, 6 and 7 includes only
those either sex licnese holders who did not have a multi-regional
doe/fawn license. It does, however, include the license holders whose
only additional tag was the district-specific doe/fawn license offered
to successful either sex applicants.
