Learning Chords on the Guitar and the Ukulele

Traditionally, these instruments are taught using note and chord names that
correspond to the musical scale using letters, sharps and flats. A typical simple song
might have three or four chords accompanying the lyrics and melody.

In our special I tuning on guitar, they’re called I, V and IV with the occasional E minor.

In our special OPEN C tuning on ukulele, they’re called Open C, Easy F and Easy G7
with the occasional A minor.

That’s a whole lot of information to sort out in the beginning so we are making this
easier.

Instead, we are going to show you ONE SYSTVIM that works for both instruments in
their open tunings. It is used in folk, country and rock genres and is called The
Nashville SystVIm and it makes these instruments interchangeable.

Think of the song “Doe a Deer” and rVImVImber that scale, do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do,

We are going to assign each sound a number- on a number line.

Your first chord is a ONE (I).
On guitar it’s called an I. On uke it’s called an Open C.

Your next chord is a FIVE (V).
On guitar it’s called an V. On uke it’s called an Easy G7.

Your next chord is a FOUR (IV).
On guitar it’s called an IV. On uke it’s called an Easy F.

We work in this order because of how our ears learn songs. First
we play songs with just the I chord. Then with I and V. Then we
add the IV chord. Then we add the minor. Then we are stars!

Some tips for reading chord charts:

• When looking at these chord charts, for guitar, String #6 (the fattest string) is on
the left side of the chart. String #1 (the thinnest string) is on the right side of the
chart.

• For ukulele,, String #4 (the same sound as string 1, both are high) is on the left
side of the chart. String #1 is on the right side of the chart.

• Each row of boxes indicates the space on the fingerboard between two frets on
the guitar.
• The first row is the space between the NUT and the first fret from the end of the
neck, the second row is the space between the first and second frets, etc.
• The “P’ tells you to place your Pointer finger on a particular string on a particular
fret.
• The “M’ tells you to place your Middle finger on a particular string on a particular
fret.
• The “R’ tells you to place your Ring finger on a particular string on a particular
fret.
• The letter names under the chart tell you what musical notes you are strumming
on the guitar when you play that chord.

Integrate Music for Learning the Alphabet:
You can teach your students to sign the alphabet in ASL along with this

Musical Learning: Tempo
You can use this song to explore “tempo” or “pace” of the song, singing it
slowly at first, then speeding it up a little with each successive repetition!
