FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to all our new members! 17 have joined us since
the last issue of ANCESTORS WEST (total now 1781).
We're delighted to have youI Please continue to let
others know about our Society and ask someone to join
you at our next meeting.
Thanks go to Helen Miller for arranging two interesting
summer bus trips. The June trip went to the Sons of the
Revolution Library in Glendale, while July introduced us
to the Southern California Genealogical Society Library
in Burbank. Regular trips to LA Public amd LALDS resume
in September.
Exciting programs are coming up this fall, so be sure to
mark your calendars.
The Board is looking for ways to expand and better the
activities of our Society. One suggestion has been that
with our increased membership, special interest groups
might be desirable. Possible areas are: New England,
Southern States, Midwestern States, England, Ireland,
Germany/Poland, etc. Meetings could be held once a
month, perhaps in the library on non-meeting Saturdays.
Does this interest you? Please let us know.
In response to another suggestion, the Board has voted
to extend our library openings to additional Saturdays.

We're eager to have more members participate in
operating the Society. Please let us know in what way
you would like to help. Can you staff the library, copy
records for indexing, type, computerize lists (if we
decide to publish something), assist with publicity,
fold and staple, bind books, help with hospitality or
sales? If you see a job that needs doing, please
mention it to us. We'd like to hear from you. (Board
members are listed inside the front cover.)
So, it's time to 'Fall in'l How many 'gaps' are there
in your pedigree chart? Take advantage of the bus trips
to LA, speakers at our regular meetings and the exciting
workshop to be conducted by Ron Bremer on October 26.

MEMBER PROFILES
MARJORIE NEFSTEAD was born in Ohio and raised in Iowa.
She and her husband Paul met at the Univ. of IAwhere
Marjorie earned her degree in Home Economics. They have
been residents of Santa Barbara since 1968, following his
23 years of service in the Army. Her interests include
gardening, theater and the League of Women Voters.
Marjorie actively started working on genealogy about one
year ago. Her families and areas of current research are:
GRIGSBY & SPICE - Kent, mid-1800s
BEMISS & CARNEY in Sandusky OH, mid-1800s
Charles SMITH - Crawford or Richland Co. OH - d. 1902
ELIZABETH TILTON's family moved to Oak Park, IL after her
birth in Omaha, NB. She attended the Univ. of IL and from
that institution acquired a BS and MS in Chemistry - and
her husband George (currently on the Geology faculty at
UCSB). Elizabeth is an active Episcopalian and is
currently a graduate student of Fuller Theological
Seminary. The Tiltons have 5 children and 4
grandchildren.
Elizabeth's research interests include:

MARIE LA BRECHE, whom you know as our Wednesday Library
Lady, has been a resident of Santa Barbara since 1923 (b.
WA). Marie was needed at home for many years, but later
served as a nurse/companion and in the accounting
department of the U.S. Forest Service. She retired from
this last position in 1976.
Marie signed up for the first genealogy class offered in
Adult. Ed. by Bette Root some 8 years ago and joined our
Society about the same time. Most of her research has
been done by mail or at the libraries in LA. She is a
member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society
and has found their book-loan service particularly
helpful.

FALL PROGRAMS
September 14. well-known author and lecturer, Anita
Cheek Milner will speak on Newspaper Indexes and Law
Libraries• For those of you who are familiar with most
of the "usual" sources for genealogical research, this
latter topic should be most interesting. Mrs. Milner
has just completed her law degree and will tell us how
we can ferret out genealogical data using law libraries
as a resource. (If you need 'food for thought', this is

Betty Turk, Vice-President of the Ventura Genealogical
Society, will join us for the October 12 meeting. Mrs.
Turk is a regional director of the California
Genealogical Alliance and will discuss the techniques
and procedures being used for the Records Inventory and
Microfilming Project. A description of this exciting
project is elsewhere in this issue. Other societies in
California are well along with surveys and we're
fortunate to have Mrs. Turk give us a first-hand account
of the work that's going on.

conduct an all-day seminar for our Society Oct. 26. Mr.
Bremer is a former Research Specialist for the
Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City and is Editor of
the "Roots Digest Magazine". He will speak on at least
5 different topics and is especially noted for his
ability to field diverse questions from the audience.
He'll be bringing with him from Salt Lake City a variety
of books for sale.

gold lettering on front cover and on the backstrip. The compiler is a wellknown and
well accepted genealogist and hi3 efforts incompiling this reference work are most
noteworthy.When thecompiler first started working with genealogical records he
found that much of the material left a lottobedesired..both as tocontext and
certainly the method of presentation. He endeavored to improve on the methods and
techniques and the comprehensive book presented isa good illustration of the results
of his efforts. He has had direct contacts with all major genealogical sources and
depositories of genealogical material. He also has maintained contacts with many
genealogical societies. He has uncovered little known and seldom used material
that has been hidden awayinprivate collectionsand archives. This hasresulted
in the establishment of an excellent bibliography. The book isdivided into five
sections andcovers the subjects of available material andwhere located inan
expert fashion. A series of 41 questions are answered in anexpert fashion and
offer many answers to genealogical problems.The book has many maps and charts which
will aid in solving research problems. This book isa definite must for all those
libraries who have an adequate budget topermit a purchase,

dexed, arranged by state, county and town in which the paper was
published,with dates of index coverage and letter symbol desig
nating index location. The latter half of the book is a listing
of the repositories, arranged alphabetically by symbol, with sub
jects indexed, cost (if any) of having an index searched, and
charges for photocopying specific articles found inan index.
Newspapers available through interlibrary loan are also noted.
In addition to the categorization by state, county and town,
there are listings for foreign newspapers, American foreign lan

Anita Cheek Milner received an M. A. in special education
with emphasis on the gifted, from San Diego State University. A
lecturer and freelance writer, her articles have appeared in The
San Diego Union, and in national genealogical publications. "She
is also the author of Newspaper Genealogical Column Directory.
Her letter also adds that the previous Sunday (May 12,1985), she
received her J. D. (law degree).

RECORD INVENTORY AND MICROFILIMING PROJECTS (RIM)
A release from East BayGenealogical Society states itsvolun
teer workers are presently working inAlameda County andthat others
in nine additionalcounties in Northern California are compiling an
inventory ofall records of value in genealogical research. The in
tent isthat theactivity will spread throughout the entire state.
Betty Turk, Vice-President of the Ventura Genealogical Society, and
a regional director of the California Genealogical Alliance at the
SBCGS October 12meeting will discuss the techniques and procedures
involved in the Records Inventory andMicrofilming Project.
An extensive search isbeing launched forrecords of value in
family history research. Such records are found in churches, ceme
teries, schools, ccnraercial organizations, libraries, museums, pri
vate homes, fraternal orders and community service organizations
and are being sought for amassive inventory and microfilming pro
ject involving theCalifornia State Genealogical Alliance, theGene
alogical Society ofUtah and theCalifornia State Archives.
Thefirst phase isaninventory inwhich therecords are iden
tified andrecorded on a prepared form. The local society volunteers
then work with the records custodians to establish a schedule and
workoutthe logistics forthefilming. Thefinal phase is the ac
tual filming by a camera crewfromSalt Lake Citywhowillsetup
their equipment at someprearranged site inthe area.
Those inventoried records selected for filming will be identi
fied by theGenealogical Society ofUtah,which will assume thecost
of filming. A copyof thefilmwillbe given to theAlliance which
will inturn present ittotheparticipating local society providing
there is a local facility, suchasthe public library, inwhichto
housethe film andmake it available to the general public.
This project, originally started inSonoma County and being
extended through the State, isviewedas an outstanding opportunity
to locate recordswhichmight otherwise be lostand to preserve
these records for all time.
Both thisrelease fromtheEastBay Genealogical Societyand
an extensivestatement as to the project from the Napa Valley Gene
alogical andBiographical Society emphasize that whileGenealogical
Society of Utahis implementing a program formicrofilming valuable
government and non-governmental records of California, the California
State GenealogicalAlliance istheoverseeing organization forlocat
ing andlisting NON-GOVERNMENTAL records of California. The program
will generate two very valuablesources:
THE INVENTORY. The first stage, the Inventory, will producea card
fileof records available in a specificCounty.including suchdata
as type ofrecord, location andextent( not individual names). A
copywill be filed withthelocal society andonewiththeCSGA.
THE FILM. As the second stagein thisproject, GSUwill film select
ed records. A copyof these films willbe entered in theirLibrary
system(Mormon Libraries) and a copywillbe givento CGSA for place
ment with the local society, providing a placeof publicaccess can
be guaranteed.
The East Bay G S release states there probably will be only one
location in the county where filmingwill be done and that it will
be necessaryfor itsmembersor the custodians of the records to
transport them to that location.
The possibility of dividingthe SantaBarbaraCounty project
betweenSBCGS and SantaMariaValleyGenealogical Society& Library,
for the northern portion of the county, shouldbe considered.
