Documentation for Frank Brandle’s Ancestors
This document is a compilation of records that were found between 2002 and 2013. This Document covers
Frantiske Brandl and his ancestors.
There are three variations of the names (Czech, German, and Latin) that are used based on the preference of
the clerk at the time. No distinction is made between the versions. I tried to use the version from the earliest
record, regardless of the variation.
Also, Czech names are different for men and women. I do not know all the rules of conjugating names, so
there are many instances where Family Search/Family Tree will show the masculine form of the name for a
women because the baptism records typically just list the given name(s) and not the surname. I have tried to
fix some, but many are still incorrect.
The pictures included are from a trip to the Czech Republic in 2004.

The record No.2: searching for the birth record of Frantisek Xaver Brandl, born on 8.September 1878:
The book No.12 of the roman-catholic parish Kolesovice (births of Kolesovice 1868-1884), where is
written the record, is not available – it is not in good condition. The microfilm also does not exist.
For this reason I use the information of researcher from 1971:

Life of Frantisek Brandle
Early records of Frantisek’s life have been difficult to find. He was raised in Bohemia, and was part of the
Hapburg Empire (Austrian) military from 1899 to 1906. He was stationed in Aussig (Usti nad Libem) from
1904 to 1906. Somewhere during this time, he married Antonie Matuna and their first daughter (Antonia)
was born in nearby Teplitz, believed to be in 1904. The last entry in his military passport is dated October
31, 1906.
Frantisek and Antonie moved to Canada, settling for a few years in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Their second
son, Frank is recorded as being born here on May 31, 1909. Frank told the story of being born on the boat
on the way from Bohemia, but the data available appears to dispute that.
No source record for Frantisek, Antonie, and Antonia entering Canada have been found yet. The 1911
Canada census states that they entered Canada in 1906. Antonie’s brother, Antonin arrived in Canada on
July 3, 1907 in Montreal on the ship Montreal from Antwerp, Belgium, and went to Glace Bay. He lists his
occupation as Shoemaker. Antonie’s father, Antonin, also came to Canada in 1908. An entry record for an
Anton (last name was too faded to read) born in 1951 can be found arriving 20 May 1908 in Montreal on the
ship Montreal from Antwerp, Belgium. It is assumed that this is our Anton as the date is right, and it is the
exact same ship that his son too. Antonie’s sister Anna also came to Canada. I believe she came with her
father in 1908. The name under the record for Anton starts with a A. The person lists that their brother is a
shoemaker. See the Matuna family section for source images.
Sometime between 1909 and 1911, the family moved to Lethbridge Alberta. The family can be found in the
1911, 1916, and 1921 Canada Census. Rudolph, their third child was born in Lethbridge on July 12, 1912.

Frantisek and Antonie had a farm outside of Lethbridge. While there is speculation surrounding the
circumstances of their deaths on June 5, 1931, it is apparent that Frantisek shot and killed Antonie in their
home, then killed himself.

catholic parish Kolesovice, on the page 1:

The groom is catholic, single, 24 years and 4 months old.
The bride: Anna Sem of Kolesovice, the matrimonial daughter of Lorenz Sem,
the tailor of Kolesovice # 109, and of the mother Dorota Dobner of
Wildstein # 18.
The bride is catholic, single, 20 years and 9 months old. (later note:
born on 2.nd March 1853 - see the book No.5 for Kolesovice, the
page 9).

Prague, in the book No.6 of the roman-catholic parish Svaty Jan pod Skalou :
