It was the heat of summer, when the lightning streaked across the sky and the waves of Ken-Harrow crashed impossibly high on the white cliffs. I was lying in bed alone, watching the sky transform through the window. It was so hot out in my little stone cottage on the cliff that I’d left the doors and windows ajar. Every so often a bout of rain dripped through the cracks in the window panes, but I did not fear the storm. What did I have to fear?I first smelled it as the sun dipped beyond the horizon. The rot of magic, deep and sickly sweet, like moulding fruit. Immediately, almost instinctively, my eyes flicked to Cayden’s chair by the fire. It was a simple chair, if a bit too large, with wooden arms and curled feet that looked somehow cozy, even with the impending storm. The chair was also empty. It had been empty for three nights now. I looked out the window, and then back to the chair again, as if turning my head back and forth would make him magically appear.I swallowed hard and crawled to the window, looking out. Nothing looked out of the ordinary, but the smell… acrid and thick, like smoke.I had my coat on and was pulling on thick boots before Sibylline’s hovercar thundered up to the cottage. She knocked, more out of politeness than necessity. I walked to the doorway and saw her dark eyes flash under her hood. Her gaze said,I would not have come unless… “Where is he?” I asked simply.”He’s at the site. I came as quickly as I could.”I yanked my hood up and followed her out.”Is he hurt?” I asked.”No.””What happened?” I pressed.”It’s better if you see for yourself.”Kira DeSomma is a graduate of Oxford Brookes Creative Writing Masters program, and a graduate of The College of New Jersey with a major in English. Kira’s work focuses on themes of feminism, especially the role of silence in women’s oppression. She is particularly interested in the intersection of Queer identity, mythology, and the natural world. Specifically, much of her work emphasizes modern modes of storytelling and urban legends. While she is not currently a cryptid hunter or UFO chaser, some might say she is getting dangerously close.As a writer, her goal is to create happily-ever-afters for characters, so that young people can see they deserve to love and be loved in return. If there happens to be magic, vampires, or shapeshifters in the mix, then so be it!Her favorite part of her own writing is being granted the permission and encouragement to embrace her own voice – and to be unapologetically loud and weird. Currently, Kira lives in New Jersey, USA. When she’s not writing novels or scribbling notes to pen pals, she enjoys going on long hikes in the woods, birdwatching, and abstract painting.
