Preface

she is afraid that I will see a little witch that looks
like me.”

Some 15 years ago as of this writing, I discovered that
down deep in my spirit, beneath layers of societal, familial,
and cultural teachings, there lived a witch! This came as a
total and complete surprise to me. After all, I grew up in the
Lutheran faith, spent five years as a Pentecostal missionary,
spent a few more years in an agnostic haze, and then stumbled
on New Age thinking quite innocently.
What came as an even greater surprise was the realiza-
tion that my journey wasn’t that unique or odd. In fact,
there were thousands of people just like me who discov-
ered alternative spirituality in much the same way, with
equal surprise and delight. For all of us, it was like coming
home to something you’d believed all along, but for which
you had no name.
The wonder and blessing of that discovery still lingers
in my heart and mind. Nonetheless, the witch within me
isn’t quite the same as she was in the beginning. I’m not so
