dlvored the New Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden. Almost all the first half of the sale was
devoted to Bnt h material, boosting the final realised total for the 1,273 lots on offer from 80 vendors to £272,295 (£313,139 including
premium). In all, 176 differenr buyers parncipared in the auction. ^
Pride of place in the ^t't'S^raon belonged to a selection of coins, mostly crowns and five-guinea pieces, from the collection formed by Allen
(^111,774 including premium) for 79 lots. Among the hammered coins, the best of two Charles I Oxford pounds
of 1643 (lot 17 which had been formerly owned by Helen Farquhar, brought £6,500 (£7,475) from Roderick Richardson; the same buyer also
^cured the other specimen (lot 17), for £5,000 (£5,750), and the rarest of the three Edward VI crowns, dated 1553/2 (lot 5), for £2 100 (£2 415).
The superb Oxford mint crown of the same date (lot 20), with an impressive pedigree dating back into the 19th century, sold to US dealer Andy
binger tor t^,6U0 (£2,990). A private UK buyer bought the attractive James I first coinage crown (lot 8) for £2,400 (£2,760).
The milled section of the Graves property produced several surprise prices. Top figure here was £6,500 (£7,475) paid for a practically as struck
1709 hve-gumeas (lot 46). Other five-guineas included extremely fine examples dated 1688, 1692 and 1716 (lots 32, 37 and 52) which made
£700 (£570), £4,700 (£5,405) and £5,800 (£6,670) respectively. Elsewhere, the 1695 proof crown formerly owned by Brigg and Lingford (lot
43), assuredly one of the finest known specimens, brought £4,400 (£5,060) from Richardson. A very attractive 1716 crown (lot 53), soared away
to £2,800 (£3,220), well over double the top estimate; in comparison, the extremely fine 1726 crown from the Whetmore and Kaufman collections
^t 56), a much under-rated rarity, seemed an excellent buy at £l,850 (£2,128). Other crowns of note included an 1853 proof (lot 70), sold for
£3,900 (£4,485), a 1732 proof (lor 57), which brought £2,400 (£2,760), and an 1821 proof with error edge (lor 67), which realised £l,800
(£2,070). An 1822 currency issue crown in brilliant mint state (lot 68) attracted considerable attention and eventually made £1,250 (£1,438).
Top price of the whole auction was the £8,000 (£9,200) paid by CNG for a superb portrait penny of Offa, which derives from the developing
Aiskew (North Yorkshire) hoard (lot 165); the buyer fought off considerable competition from private individuals in the UK and USA to secure the
com. The /Ethelred II first hand type penny of Lympne with the left-facing bust (lot 170), the first coin of this type to appear at auction since 1987
was bought by a private collector in the USA for £3,000 (£3,450), matching the top estimate. A commission bidder secured the very rare Mary fine'
sovereign with halved rose and castle mint-mark (lot 233), for £6,200 (£7,130), while a Richard II noble (lot 208) and an Edward IV Bristol ryal
(lot 216) were bought in the room for £l,350 (£1,553) and £l,150 (£1,323) respectively. In the Celtic offering, £750 (£863) bids secured attractive
staters of Addedomaros and Tasciovanus (lots 145-6), while the exceptional Corieltauvian silver unit naming Esup Rasu (lot 149) brought £680
(p82); all three were bought by Chris Rudd. British milled from other properties included an 1839 proof crown (lot 380), bought by Cooke for
the mid-estimate figure of £3,500 (£4,025), and possibly the finest known example of a Victorian halfpenny, 1862, with the die letter A (lot 404),
sold to a UK dealer for £980 (£1,127). Best of a good run of Gothic florins was an 1862 (lot 425), bought by KB Coins for £500 (£575).
Among the American coins, considerable pre-sale interest once again surrounded two Massachusetts Oak Tree threepences - one found in
Lincolnshire, the other in Kent. The Lincolnshire find (lot 821) drew a winning bid of £2,500 (£2,875), while the coin found in Kent (lot 822)
brought £900 (£1,035); both were bought by dealers from the USA. A very fine half-dime of 1803 (lot 839), from an English private collection,
realised £1,600 (£1,840). Other highlights in the world coin section included a New Zealand Waitangi proof set of 1935 (lot 767), which also
fetched £1,600 (£1,840), and the superb Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel gold 10-thalers of 1763 (lot 697), for which £1,400 (£1,610) was paid.
Ancient coins included the collection formed by Des Stanley of Billericay, Essex. Best price here was for the little gold quinarius of Hadrian (lot
924) formerly in the Brand collection; this sold to CNG for £3,300 (£3,795). Elsewhere, demand was patchy, although a plated denarius of
Claudius (lot 880) was bid to £270 (£311), a denarius of Clodius Albinus (lot 960) to £260 (£299) and a sestertius of Didia Clara (lot 959) to
£2.50 (£288).
In the concluding sections of historical and art medals there were relatively few surprises and the occasional disappointment; while the group of
four Olympic and related medals to PC W Hirons, including a gold medal for the 1908 Games (lot 1242), sold to a private UK collector for £2,300
(£2,645), the fascinating and important group of Olympic and related medals awarded to the athlete Gordon Goodwin (lot 1246) failed to find a
buyer. The 1855 Paris Expo gold medal awarded to civil engineer Robert Stephenson, who built the famous Rocket steam locomotive in 1829 (lot
1089), brought a modest £1,650 (£1,898). Support for art medals was generally good, with a group of pieces by David d’Angers witnessing spirited
bidding, his medal of the physician Victor Broussais (lot 1125) brought £370 (£426), while one of the revolutionary partisan Saint-Just (lot 1126)

his, our 51st coin auction, is the first ol its kind to be held at our new permanent venue, the New
Cionnaught Rooms, in the heart of l.ondon’s (iovent (iarden (see map opposite). An extra advantage
of our new, larger home is the much enhanced viewing facilities we can offer on the day of the
auctioti. Potential buyers are now able to view in a separate room while the auction is taking place, saving
valuable rime.
I leadlining the British coins in this sale are a number of important pieces from the collecticjn of
Buckinghamshire numismatist Allen Graves. Acquired with a firm eye on quality, some of these coins are the
best of their type to have appeared on the market in recent times. Of particular note are the two (diaries I
Oxford pounds (lot 16-17), the finest of which was once owned by the doyenne of British female
numismatists, Helen Farquhar, and a simply stunning 1643 Oxford crown with a lengthy pedigree (lot 20).
Among the milled coins are superb five-guinea pieces of 1701, 1709, 1713 and 1716, perhaps the finest
known 1695 proof crown (lot 43), and other proofs of this denomination dated 1732, I 746 and I 853.
Quality was also uppermost when the Easton collection of British milled sixpences was being formed,
as a glance at the catalogue shows - the 37 lots include rare proofs of 1817, 1818 and 1887 young head.
Other properties of British coins feature a number of rarities in the Celtic series, an extremely fine
Offa penny of an obverse type believed only known from three specimens (lot 165), an important new
^thelred II First Hand penny with left-facing bust from the Kentish mint of Lympne (lot 170), a Mary fine
sovereign bearing the extremely rare halved rose and castle mint-mark (lot 233), and no less than 30 other
British hammered gold coins.
Highlight of the world coin section is an extremely rare 10 louis d’or of Louis XIII, dated 1640, by
the Parisian master engraver Jean Warin (lot 671) - the first specimen to have been offered at auction in
England since 1987. As a direct result of our very successful sale of a Masschusetts Oak Tree twopence in
June, we have been asked to sell two threepences of this coinage (lot 821-2); both were found by metal
detectorists in England. Another coin worthy of mention in this portion of the sale is the handsome
Brunswick-Wolfenbiittel 10-thalers of 1763 (lot 697), which derives from an old English collection.
Departing with tradition, over 180 lots of ancient coins complete the second session. The majority,
including some attractive portrait pieces, comprise the collection of over 350 Roman coins formed by Des
Stanley of Billericay, Essex. Star item here is a gold quinarius of Hadrian (lot 924), bought by Virgil Brand
from the legendary Philadelphia dealer Henry Chapman in 1916.
Medals relating to the Olympic Games have always enjoyed a strong international following and this
auction includes three particularly attractive groups. The most interesting citation surrounds the awards to
Gordon Goodwin, who placed second in the controversial 10,000 metres walk at the 1924 Games (lot 1246),
which are being sold with a quantity of contemporary newspaper cuttings detailing Goodwin’s athletic career.
From the 1908 London Games are PC W. Hirons’ gold medal for the tug-of-war (lot 1242) and a silver medal
attributed to W.H. Levy (lot 1243); both of these groups offer opportunities for further research. Also of
Olympic interest is the gold Joy of Effort medal of 1914 (lot 1232), originally sculpted by the Ontario
medallist Tait Mckenzie to commemorate the Stockholm Games of 1912.
In a smaller than usual offering, the historical and art medal section includes the very important gold
medal of honour from the 1855 Paris Expo awarded to the railway pioneer and inventor Robert Stephenson
(lot 1089); Stephenson received the medal as a direct result of his bridge designs, especially that for the
world’s first tubular girder bridge across the Menai Strait, linking Anglesey with mainland North Wales. .Also
of note are a good group of bronze portrait studies by the French master David d’Angers (lots 1 120-6), a verv
early work by Henri Patey in an ornate frame (lot I 136) and, also from the British standpoint, a large Dassier
silver medal of the Duke of Montagu, 175 I (lot 1044).
