Preface
The purpose of this volume is to bring up to date the annotated bibliography pub-
lished in 1985. The organization, with some minor revision, and scope remain the
same. The statement I made in the preface is as appropriate in 2006 as it was in
1984 when it was written.
Not surprisingly, the sources and literature for the Great War, as it was fre-
quently called before it was surpassed in ferocity and destruction by World War
II, are vast. No comparable period in modern history has been so thoroughly
written about, from personal accounts to official histories, or documented in
sources ranging from the voluminous British Cabinet Papers to the holdings of
the National Archives and the Hoover Institution of War, Revolution and Peace
Library. Nor have reference works been lacking, as a glance at the first chapter
of this volume will attest. The compilers of this bibliography recognize and are
greatly indebted to the many existing bibliographies, catalogs, guides, and bib-
liographical essays on either the war or related aspects of the conflict. This bibli-
ography differs from these reference sources in one or more important ways. The
annotations to entries frequently offer a critical evaluation.
The bibliography also reflects the current broader interpretation of military
history because it examines the war’s impact on society, institutions, and thought
and goes beyond military operations. Its coverage ranges from war films and lit-
erature to civil-military relations to women and the war.
As Michael Howard has written, “once war was conducted by governments
rather than by generals and fought by—and against—entire peoples rather than by
professional armies, the boundary between ‘military’ and ‘general’ history became
very difficult to trace. The one merged almost imperceptibly into the other.”1
In a war that lasted 1,563 days, the United States was at war for 19 months
and was involved in large-scale military operations for some 110 days. American
involvement in the war is the primary focus of this bibliography, but the com-
pilers believe that the part played by the United States would be presented in a
vacuum if only sources and literature directly pertaining to America and the war
were included. Some of the best accounts of American neutrality and belligerency
have been the product of research in foreign archives; any study of American war
objectives, for example, is incomplete if the war aims of the European belliger-
ents are not fully understood and taken into account; and the military historian
who writes a history of the American Expeditionary Forces’ fight against the Ger-
man army will benefit immeasurably from a knowledge of British and European
literature and sources on military operations. The war was largely a European
