the largest seaborne
invasion in history took place
when soldiers from Britain, the
USA and Canada, together with
the Free French Forces, streamed
onto the beaches of Normandy
in France as part of Operation
Overlord. The invasion had begun
the previous night with air strikes
and a naval bombardment.
This image, called ‘Into The
Jaws of Death’, was shot by Chief
Photographer’s Mate Robert F
Sargent in a landing craft of the
USS Samuel Chase. It was taken
just as the troops of Company E,
16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division
(the Big Red One) waded onto
Fox Green sector, Omaha Beach.
US soldiers encountered the
German 352nd Division when
landing, and during the initial
