Mission, of Xatal—, South Africa. It novv issues th—c second edition of music and
wordscombined, theeiglitheditionof—thewords, thoroughlyrevisedandmuch
enlarged.—Thefirstedition with music musicadaptcd to therhythmoftheZulu
languag—e camc out in 1887. Thebook wasthenis—suedin threestyles, twowith
music, thc Staff and the Tonic Sol-fa respcctivcly, and one with words only.
The new musical fcaturepromoted great improvement in theserviceofsong. The
previous disagrecable screaming of unrestrained voices gradually toned down, and
some of the young people soon acquired sufficicnt knowlcdge of musical notation
todrillchoirs. Fromtimctotimefreshlotswerestruckofffromtheoriginalplates,
untilmorethan60,000copiesofthethreestyleswereissuedandcirculatcd.
Theoriginalplanhavingjustifieditselfbytwodecadesofacceptableuse,thebook
wassubjected toathoroughsiftingandrevision,andwiththegenerousaidofother
missionaries and the natives, was greatly enlarged by the addition of new hymns
and tunes. The expanding city work has shown a demand for words and music
of a catchyandchorus character, suited to arrest the attention of the thoughtless
and untaught among barrack and ricksha boys, and a numberof this kind have
beeninsertedunderthcheadofChoruses (Amakorusi) tomeet thisneed. Manyof
the hymns in thc Hymnal represent English originals, but in most cases they are
ratheran adaptationof the thoughtof theEnglishhymn thanaproper translation
ofthelanguage.
Responsive Readings have been appended to the Staff and Tonic Sol-fa cditions
inordertomakethemmorehclpfulasamanualofworship.
Muchvaluable—materialhasbeencontributed,from first tolast, byfellowworkers
ofotherbodies, Wesleyan, ChurchofEngland, Church of thc Provincc of South
Africa,BerlinMission,XorwegianMission,UnitedFreeChurchofScotlandMission,
South African General Mission, Swedish Mission, and alsoby indepcndent mission-
ariesandnatives. TheIsixosa collcction early furnished a large numberof hymns.
Hymns,in manvcases, have undergone changc, somc littlc, somemuch, in ordcr to
titthembetterforeffectiveserviceandadapt themtomusicalacccnt,but thenames
of the original authors have been retained in thc index. Manv of these hymn-
writers of thepast have nowjoined thehcavenlychoir, leavingus to voice, in their
hymns, God's praise below.

The past usefulness of Amagama Okuhlabelela encourages thehope, and inspires
theprayer,thatinitsrevisedandfullercontentsitmaybecomeevenmoreserviceable,
as a means of spiritual renovation and development, and as a help to worshippers
