All About Osteoarthritis represents the sixth in a successful series of
books covering rheumatic disease related topics including lupus, fi­
bromyalgia, scleroderma, osteoporosis, and Sjogren's syndrome. In 1995,
Oxford University Press pioneered the concept of reviewing important
medical topics for lay people, allied health professionals, and physicians.
Prior to that time, there existed a gap between literature disseminated by
disease-oriented foundations and medical textbooks where one could
not obtain a detailed, readable, concise, and medically accurate review
of rheumatic disease topics. We are encouraged to have the support of
the National Osteoporosis Foundation, Arthritis Foundation, Lupus
Foundation of America, Scleroderma Foundation, and Sjorgren's Syn­
drome Foundation. Osteoarthritis is an extremely common, poorly un­
derstood, under-researched disorder. It has been an exciting challenge
attempting to distill voluminous facts and information into this text.
The reader will jud ge how successful our efforts were. The authors are
