JoséLópez Portillo y Rojas (1850-1923) obtuvo el título de abogado en 1971 y pocodespués realizó un viaje por los Estado Unidos, Europa y Oriente. A su regresopublicó Egipto y Palestina: apuntes de viaje (1874) y se dedicó a la enseñanza y al ejercicio de su profesión. Fue diputado ysenador por Jalisco y, en 1911,gobernador de ese estado. Posteriormente ocupó los cargos de ministro deEducación Pública y de Relaciones Exteriores; sin embargo, la inestabilidad delos tiempos durante la Revolución terminó con la carrera política de LópezPortillo, y a partir de entonces se dedicó a la enseñanza y a la creaciónliteraria. Nuestro autor produjo obras de carácter jurídico, filosófico,histórico, político y religioso. Cultivó la poesía, el cuento, la novela, eldrama, el periodismo y la crítica literaria; no obstante, su fama descansa ensus cuentos y novelas.
