PILGRIM FAITH UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
Founded January 21, 1970, with the merger of Pilgrim
United Church ofChrist ofOak Lawn and Faith United Church of
Christ ofChicago.
Pilgrim Church was organized October 31,1891, as the First
Congregational Church of Oak Lawn. In 1966, the name was
changed to Pilgrim United Church ofChrist to reflect the union of
the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and
Reformed Church in 1957.
In 1947, ten years before the national merger, St. Luke's
Evangelical and Reformed Church (1888) and the Brainerd
Community Church (Congregational - 1894), both of Chicago,
united to form Faith United Church ofChrist ofChicago.
In 1969 representatives of Pilgrim and Faith Churches came
together to discuss the future of their two congregations, seeking
to understand and implement God's call to them in their time and
place. By January, 1970, a merger of the two congregations was
deemed desirable, and, upon the approval of each, a new church,
embracing the history, traditions and people of both congrega
tions, while being a new creation with renewed hopes and
possibilities through God's present and future generations, was
formed.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTORS
St. Paul writes that we should "bear one another's burdens and so fulfill
the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2), and again, "If one member suffers, all
suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together." (I
Corinthians 12:26). With over 500 families in Pilgrim Faith Church, perhaps
such a close relationship and concern for one another as Paul describes, is
impossible. This difficulty is intensified by the fact that we live in a mobile
society and a growing community. Nevertheless, if our church is to in any
way fulfill these ideals stated by Paul, we as a congregation should always be
seeking to establish with one another more personal relationships so that no
one finds himself unknown and alone in the fellowship of the church. This
family church pictorial directory hopefully can be a useful tool in becoming
better acquainted and in opening new doors of communication and
friendship.
We would suggest that you go beyond the viewing of your own family
picture. Let us also all study the names and faces ofour fellow members, so
that when the opportunity arises, we can come to know each other more
fully and, to a greater degree, to bear one another's burdens and suffer and
rejoice with each other.
