Preface
Aerospace project management with an emphasis in space systems is a discipline unto
itself. Aerospace project management encompasses intricacies not seen in many terrestrial
activities. These range from additional compliance requirements from earned value man-
agement and regulations (such as ESA, NASA, FAA, etc.) to criticality and risk factors for
systems where traditional repair is impossible and innovative, cutting-edge technology is
deployed. As the space industry has matured, the role of project management has evolved
to be a discipline-proven approach to success in the unique and unforgiving space envi-
ronment. In a handbook style, this book offers step-by-step approaches with an emphasis
on applied techniques and tools. The handbook is designed to be the foundation work for
seasoned program managers, new project managers, technical leads, systems engineers,
and principal payload leads.
Although many of the examples in this book are derived from space programs support-
ing NASA, and the U.S. Department of Defense, the same discipline applies to commercial
programs. The corporate knowledge contained in this book has one purpose: to reduce risk
in spacecraft missions and to achieve success.
