Preface
Reliability and safety analysis are the important application in the mathematical
engineering.Nothinglastforeverissoisthelifeofengineeringsystems.Themain
reason of the failure of engineering system ranges from minor inconvenience to
signifytoeconomiclossanddeaths.Designers,manufacturesandendusersattempt
by employing efforts to minimize the occurrence ofthe failure. This field creates a
wide range of problems due to their practical importance and give rise to the new
development to create methods and can contain an interesting mathematical pro-
cedure. Reliability deals with the failure concept, whereas safety deals with the
consequenceoffailure. Reliabilityengineering explores thefailurestoimprove the
performanceofengineeringsystems.Itplaysavitalroleindifferentsectorssuchas
chemical,nuclearfacilities andaerospaceandcanimposepotentialhazards.Italso
gains much more importance among practicing engineers and manufacturers. The
subject of reliability engineering also appearing in several institutions and univer-
sities. It should also be used in many fields and as a particular interest to all
electrical,electronic,mechanical,chemical,andindustrialandsoon.Reliabilityand
safety are the core issues to be addressed during the design, operation, and main-
tenanceofengineeringsystems.Throughthisbookentitled“AdvanceinReliability
and System Engineering” the engineers have to gain a great knowledge and help
them in the reliability courses. The book is meant for those who to take reliability
andsafetyasasubjectofstudy.Thematerialisintendedforanaudienceatthelevel
of postgraduate or senior undergraduate students. That’s why reliability and safety
is now as well recognized and rapidly developing branch of engineering.

NandanBahugunaGarhwalUniversity,Srinagar(Garhwal),India,in2004,andthe
Ph.D.degreemajorinmathematicsandminorincomputersciencefromG.B.Pant
UniversityofAgricultureandTechnology,Pantnagar,India,in2008.Hehasbeena
FacultyMemberforaroundeightyearsandhastaughtseveralcorecoursesinpure
andappliedmathematicsatundergraduate,postgraduate,anddoctoratelevels.Heis
currently Professor with the Department of Mathematics, Graphic Era University,
Dehradun, India. Before joining the Graphic Era University, he was a Deputy
Manager (Probationary Officer) with Syndicate Bank for a short period. He is
Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Mathematical, Engineering and
ManagementSciences;ExecutiveAssociateEditoroftheJournalofReliabilityand
Statistical Studies and the Guest Editor & Member of the editorial board of many
journals. He is a regular Reviewer for international journals, including IEEE,
Elsevier, Springer, Emerald, John Wiley, Taylor & Francis and many other pub-
lishers. He has published 77 research papers in IEEE, Springer, Emerald, World
Scientific and many other national and international journals of repute and also
presentedhisworksatnationalandinternationalconferences.Hisfieldsofresearch
are reliability theory and applied mathematics. Dr. Ram is a member of the IEEE,
OperationalResearchSocietyofIndia,SocietyforReliabilityEngineering,Quality
and Operations Management in India, International Association of Engineers in
Hong Kong, and Emerald Literati Network in the U.K. He has been a member
oftheorganizingcommitteeofanumberofinternationalandnationalconferences,
seminars,andworkshops.Hehasbeenconferredwith“YoungScientistAward”by
theUttarakhandStateCouncilforScienceandTechnology,Dehradun,in2009.He
has been awarded the “Best Faculty Award” in 2011 and recently “Research
Excellence Award” in 2015 for his significant contribution in academics and
research at Graphic Era University.

J. Paulo Davim received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 1997, M.Sc.
degree in Mechanical Engineering (materials and manufacturing processes) in
1991, Licentiate degree (5 years) in Mechanical Engineering in 1986, from the
UniversityofPorto (FEUP), theAggregate titlefrom theUniversity ofCoimbrain
2005andaD.Sc.fromLondonMetropolitanUniversityin2013.HeisEurIngand
Senior CharteredEngineer bythePortuguese Institution ofEngineerswithaMBA
and Specialist title in Engineering and Industrial Management. Currently, he is
ProfessorattheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineeringoftheUniversityofAveiro.
He has more than 30 years of teaching and research experience in Manufacturing,
Materials and Mechanical Engineering with special emphasis in Machining &
Tribology.Recently,hehasalsointerestinManagement/IndustrialEngineeringand
HigherEducationforSustainability/EngineeringEducation.Hehasreceivedseveral
scientific awards. He has worked asevaluator of projects for international research
agenciesaswellasexaminerofPh.D.thesisformanyuniversities.HeistheEditor
in Chief of several international journals, Guest Editor of journals, books Editor,
book Series Editor and Scientific Advisory for many international journals and
conferences.Presently,heisanEditorialBoardmemberof30internationaljournals
and acts as reviewer for more than 80 prestigious Web of Science journals. In
addition,hehasalsopublishedaseditor(andco-editor)morethan80booksandas
author (and co-author) more than 10 books, 60 book chapters and 350 articles in
