Sustainable Infrastructure impacts our well-being and day-to-day lives. The
infrastructures we are building today will shape our lives tomorrow. The complex
and diverse nature of the impacts due to weather extremes on transportation and
civil infrastructures can be seen in our roadways, bridges, and buildings. Extreme
summer temperatures, droughts, flash floods, and rising numbers of freeze-thaw
cycles pose challenges for civil infrastructure and can endanger public safety. We
constantly hear how civil infrastructures need constant attention, preservation, and
upgrading. Such improvements and developments would obviously benefit from
ourdesired bookseries thatprovidesustainable engineering materials anddesigns.
The economic impact is huge and much research has been conducted worldwide.
The future holds many opportunities, not only for researchers in a given country,
but also for the worldwide field engineers who apply and implement these
technologies. We believe that no approach can succeed if it does not unite the
efforts of various engineering disciplines from all over the world under one
umbrellatoofferabeaconofmodernsolutionstotheglobalinfrastructure.Experts
from the various engineering disciplines around the globe will participate in this
series, including: Geotechnical, Geological, Geoscience, Petroleum, Structural,
Transportation, Bridge, Infrastructure, Energy, Architectural, Chemical and
Materials, and other related Engineering disciplines.

About the Editors
Dr. Meguid received his Ph.D. degree in
Geotechnical Engineering from the University of
Western Ontario. He spent one year as a postdoctoral
fellow at Queen’s University before accepting an
industrialpositionasaprojectmanagerforaprominent
consulting company in Canada. In 2004, he joined
McGill University as an Assistant Professor of Civil
Engineering. During his tenure at McGill, he held
numerousadministrativepositions,includingAssociate
Chair of the Civil Engineering Department between
2010 and 2012 and Associate Dean of the Faculty of
Engineering between 2012 and 2016. He is currently
the Chair of Civil Engineering Department at McGill
University.
The teaching interests of Dr. Meguid include
numerical methods in geomechanics, analysis and
designofsubsurfacestructuresandsustainablegeotech-
nique. His research can be broadly categorized into
three primary areas of specialization (i) geosynthetic
engineering, (ii) sustainable subsurface infrastructures,
(iii) multi-scale modeling of granular material in
contact with solid structures. He has been consulted
in several national and international projects. He is a
member of the Trenchless Engineering International
Research Advisory Committee. He received several
teachingandresearchawards,andhisgraduatestudents
have been recognized with various honors from
professional societies in North America.

Dr. Erol Guler is a full professor of geotechnical
engineering at Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey,
since 1989. He acted as the Director of Environmental
SciencesInstituteofBogaziciUniversitybetween1996
and1999andastheChairmanoftheCivilEngineering
Departmentbetween2004and2010.HewasaVisiting
Fulbright Professor at the University of Maryland
between1989and1991.Heistheleadinggeosynthetic
scientist in Turkey, having been an IGS Member since
1989.HefoundedtheIGSTurkishChapterin2001and
servedasitspresidentuntil2005,andwasreelectedasa
president again in 2011. He was the organizer for the
firsttwonationalgeosyntheticconferencesin2004and
2006 and is currently the chairman of the 7th congress
which will be held in 2017. He was also of the
Chairman of the 2016 European Regional Conference
of IGS, EuroGeo6. He has been a member of the
International Standards Organization (ISO) Technical
committee on geosynthetics as a representative of the
Turkish Standards Institute since 2002. He is currently
the Convener of the WG2 of ISO/TC221 (Technical
Committee on geosynthetics) and is also the Convener
of the WG2 of CEN-TC189 (European Committee for
Standardization’s Technical Committee on geosynthet-
ics). He is currently an international member of the
USA TRB Committee on Geosynthetics. His research
has focused mainly on geosynthetic-reinforced walls,
and specifically, he conducted research on the use of
marginal soils in such structures and their behavior
underearthquakeloadingconditions.Hisresearchwork
includesnumericalstudiesaswellasshakingtabletests
and full-scale tests. He has over one hundred scientific
publications. In addition to his research work, he has
extensive practical experience, including design work
for numerous projects where geosynthetics were used
as reinforcement or liners.

Prof. Dr. Eng. J. P.Giroud
Member of the US National Academy of
Engineering
Dr. Giroud is a consulting engineer, member of the
US National Academy of Engineering, Doctor Honoris
Causa of the Technical University of Bucharest, Past
President of the International Geosynthetics Society
(IGS), Chairman Emeritus and founder of Geosyntec
Consultants, and Chairman of the Editorial Board of
Geosynthetics International, Chevalier in the Order
of the Légion d’Honneur and a former professor of
geotechnical engineering. He has authored over 400
publications. He coined the terms “geotextile” and
“geomembrane” in 1977. He has developed many
of the design methods used in geosynthetics engineer-
ing and has originated a number of geosynthetic
applications. In 1994, theIGS named its highest award
“TheGiroudLecture,”“inrecognitionoftheinvaluable
contributions of Dr. J. P. Giroud to the technical
advancementofthegeosyntheticsdiscipline”;aGiroud
LectureispresentedattheopeningofeachInternational
Conference on Geosynthetics. In 2002, he became
Honorary Member of the IGS with the citation “Dr.
Giroud is truly the father of the International
Geosynthetics Society and the geosynthetics disci-
pline.” In 2005, he has been awarded the status of
“hero” of the Geo-Institute of the American Society of
Civil Engineers (ASCE) and has delivered the presti-
gious Vienna Terzaghi Lecture. In 2005–2006, he
presented the Mercer Lectures, a prestigious lecture
seriesendorsedjointlybytheIGSandtheInternational
Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical
Engineering (ISSMGE). In 2008, he delivered the
prestigious Terzaghi Lecture of the ASCE. In 2016, he
deliveredtheprestigiousVictordeMelloLectureofthe
ISSMGE and, in 2017, the prestigious Széchy Lecture,
in Budapest. He has 56 years of experience in
geotechnical engineering, including 48 years on
geosynthetics.
