EvgeniaG.Korzhikova-Vlakh
Evgenia G. Korzhikova-Vlakh studied chemistry at Saint-Petersburg State University (SPBU,
Russia)andthenobtainedherPhDintheInstituteofMacromolecularCompounds,RussianAcademy
of Sciences (IMC RAS). Since 2012, she has been an Associated Professor at SPBU, and since 2016,
she has been a leading scientist, head of the Laboratory of Polymer sorbents and carriers for
biotechnology, in IMC RAS. Her research has focused on the development and study of polymeric
materials for bioanalysis, biocatalysis, solid-phase extraction, drug delivery, and regenerative
medicine. Dr. Korzhikova-Vlakh has published more than 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed
internationaljournals.

Theuseofpolymersforvariouspurposesisincreasingeveryyear. Inthisregard,the
productionofpolymericmaterialsfromnaturalrenewablesources,aswellastheobtention
ofbiodegradablepolymericmaterialsandtheirrecycling,comestotheforeinthepackaging
anddisposableproductsindustry. Inaddition,bio-basedandbiodegradablematerialsare
becoming more and more prominent in medical practice as implants, regenerative and
wound-healingmaterials,etc. Thus,modernenvironmentalrequirements,aswellasthe
introductionofnewtechnologiesinbiomedicine,posethechallengetodevelopinnovative
“green”polymericmaterialswiththedesiredproperties.Thedopingofpolymericmaterials
withvariousfillerstopreparethecompositesmakesitpossibletoadjustandimprovetheir
properties,suchasmechanicalandphysicochemicalcharacteristics,biologicalperformance,
degradationrate,conductivity,etc.,inatargetedmanner.Thecombinationofbio-basedand
biodegradablepolymerswithfillers/reinforcementsofvariouschemistries,dimensions,
andgeometriescanleadtoahigherlevelofdiversityprovidedbycompositematerialsas
comparedtojustpolymericones.
Giventhegrowinginterestinpolymericcompositematerials,thisSpecialIssuesum-
marizes the latest advances in science and technology of bio-based and biodegradable
composites,includingtheproduction,characterization,andapplicationofsuchcomposites,
