lhe keynote of this volume of Proceedings is 'Aerobiology to
day'. The 3rd International Conference on Aerobiology in Basel
brought together a very large number of contributions on this
main theme, in the form of lectures and posters, from many
different areas. The scope of the volume of abstracts shows
the great variety of the presentations. It seemed appropriate
that we should also publish the Proceedings, to prevent much
of what was discussed in Basel being forgotten. However, since
the cost had to be considered, some selection was necessary.
As the reader will see, the contribution have been arranged,
as far as possible, according to a number of main themes. As
a whole - as the list of contents shows - the volume provides
a general survey of current endeavour in the field of Aero
biology.
There is an introductory article about the origin of the ex
pression 'Aeroplankton' and, in particular, about the creator
of the word' Aerobiology'.
The editiors hope that the systematic arrangement of the con
tents, and above all the detailed keyword index, will make it
easy for the reader to find his way through the volume.
