Abu Zayd al-Balkhi was a 9th century Persian polymath who authored over 60 manuscripts, including Masalih al-Abdan wal-Anfus ("Sustenance of the Body and Soul"), considered one of the earliest works on psychology. In it, he distinguished between normal and pathological forms of mental distress like sadness, anger, anxiety and obsessions. He described treatments drawing on humoral theory as well as early forms of CBT, music therapy, and interpersonal therapy. He emphasized that endogenous depression requires medical treatment while reactive depression benefits from various psychotherapies, and recognized the importance of counseling in managing mental illness.
