Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809. He was born in a log
cabin, on a farm in the state of Kentucky. He lived on this farm for two
years.

Lincoln’s father’s name was Thomas.
His mother’s name was Nancy. Lincoln had one
sister who was two years older. Her name was
Sarah.

When Lincoln was seven years old, his family moved to
Indiana. Lincoln was a strong boy. He helped his father build a
log cabin.

Abraham Lincoln helped to cut down trees, and he helped
clear the fields so crops could be planted. When Abe was eight
years old he was given an ax. He split many logs. They were used
to build houses and fences.

When Abraham Lincoln was nine years old, his mother died from a disease.
The pioneers called the disease “milk sickness.”

One year later his father remarried. Lincoln’s new mother had three
children. Abe enjoyed his new family. They later moved to Illinois.

Abe Lincoln spent less than one year in school when he was a boy. He
learned most of his reading, writing, and math at home.

Abe would often do his math problems on a board. He loved to read books. His
family could not afford to buy books. Abe would often walk many miles to borrow
books to read.

When Lincoln was twenty-one years old, he became a clerk in a store. He
had a room in the back of the store to use as a bedroom. Lincoln became a lawyer
when he was twenty-seven years old. He would sometimes walk twenty miles to
borrow books to study law.

The people Abe worked with liked him. They knew he was honest and friendly. He
was a great storyteller. People liked to listen to Lincoln speak.

Later, Lincoln moved to Springfield, Illinois. There, he met and married Mary Todd. He
was thirty-three years old. They had four sons.

One of their sons died when he was four years old. A second son died when he was
eleven years old, and a third son died when he was eighteen years old.

Lincoln became a United States congressman in 1847. He served one term.
After his term, he returned to Illinois.

He wanted to become a senator in 1858. He lost the election but became
famous for debating his opponent.

Lincoln ran for President of the United States in 1860. He won the election.

When Lincoln was President, the flag of the United States had thirty-
three stars and thirteen stripes.
The flag is known as the “Stars and Stripes” or as “Old
Glory.’ Red stands for courage, blue stands for justice,
and white stands for purity.
Abraham Lincoln did not want any new territories to become slave states.
President Lincoln did not want slavery to expand.
The Civil War began one month after Abraham Lincoln became President. Southern states
left the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. They wanted to
separate themselves from the northern states. Lincoln sent the militia in the North
to fight against the South.
Lincoln signed a document called the “Emancipation Proclamation.” This
proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. It helped to end slavery in the United
States. Lincoln led the nation in a very difficult time, the American Civil War.

Eight months after Lincoln died slavery ended.

Abraham Lincoln and his wife were at a performance in Ford’ s
Theater, in Washington D.C. A man by the name of John Wilkes Booth
shot Lincoln in the head. Lincoln was seriously injured. He was carried to
a house across the street. Doctors tried to save his life. President Abraham
Lincoln died early on the morning of April 15, 1865.

Abraham Lincoln was remembered for his achievements as President of
the United States.

Lincoln was a great speech maker. The “Gettysburg Address” is his most
famous speech. Another famous speech was his second inaugural address. In
this speech, Lincoln urged “malice toward none” and “charity for all.” Lincoln
died on April, 15, 1865. Abraham Lincoln was fifty-six years old when he died.
