Contemporary Film Directors
Edited by James Naremore
Edited by Justus Nieland and Jennifer Fay
The Contemporary Film Directors series provides concise,
well-written introductions to directors from around the
world and from every level of the fi lm industry. Its chief
aims are to broaden our awareness of important artists,
to give serious critical attention to their work, and to illus-
trate the variety and vitality of contemporary cinema. Con-
tributors to the series include an array of internationally
respected critics and academics. Each volume contains
an incisive critical commentary, an informative interview
with the director, and a detailed fi lmography.
A list of books in the series appears at the end of this book.

Preface and Acknowledgments
The theory behind this book’s methodology isn’t only that two heads are
better than one but also that two viewpoints from different cameras—
especially if they came from separate cultures and could interact and
communicate with each other—might bring greater depth to a study
of Abbas Kiarostami. The two essays that begin this book were written
simultaneously and developed concurrently—both cover the body of
Abbas Kiarostami’s work up through 2001, but from somewhat different
angles and with the benefi t of separate contexts; much the same could
be said for the subsequent essays added for this updated edition. In
the following dialogues, conducted in 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2017, the
authors seek to clarify those angles and contexts as well as discuss various
points of disagreement and convergence. Finally, their interviews with
Kiarostami, conducted between 1998 and 2002 and then in 2013, will
hopefully illuminate and broaden some of the issues raised.
For diverse kinds of assistance, the authors would like to thank Jam-
sheed Akrami, Brian Andriotti, Mohammed Atebbai, Michael Beard,
Mahmud Behraznia, Godfrey Cheshire, Amir Esfandari, Jean-Michel
Frodon, John Gianvito, Houshang Golmakini, Kent Jones, Mahoud
Kalari, Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, Hossein Khandan, Ehsan Khoshbakht,
Ahmad Kiarostami, Frank Lewis, Patrick Z. McGavin, Mitra Mohaseni,
James Naremore, Mahvash Sheikh Ol-Islami, Mohammad Pakshir, Ray
Privett, Aziz Saati, Seifollah Samadian, Martin Scorsese, and, in particular,
Abbas Kiarostami.
