Cette étude est une recherche sur l'existence de la Communauté Juive et des communautés juives à Toulouse et dans le Comté de Toulouse au Moyen Age qu'à l'expulsion définitive de 1394 et partir du XVIIe siècle. Elle regroupe un grand nombre de documents tirés de différentes archives : nationales ou municipales. Ainsi elle rappelle les avanies que subirent les fils d'Israël sous les différents seigneurs au Moyen Age ainsi que celles infligés aux Marranes (crypto-juifs) qui tentèrent de s'installer dans la cité rose après la révocation de l'Edit de Nantes. Sous la Révolution française différents groupes juifs s'installèrent à l'ombre des Capitouls et y firent souche mais l'histoire les a encore rattrapés : l'antisémitisme fut virulent durant toute l'Affaire Dreyfus. Pourtant dès 1870, les Juifs toulousains firent montre de leur patriotisme et combattirent auprès de leur aumônier militaire : Léon Oury, aïeul du cinéaste Gérard Oury. Ce travail démontre aussi que de nombreuses personnalités sont issues de cette communauté ou y eurent un rapport : Bernard Lazare, Ephraïm Michael, Catulle Mendés, les Pereire, Jean Cruppi, les Sorano, etc. On verra que la fonction publique et l'armée seront un moyen de promotion sociale, notamment pour Léon Cohn, Préfet ou le capitaine Lévy.
