In 1890 British colonists set up camp at Fort Salisbury in the southern African region known as Mashonaland. The Shona tribes living in the area were still in the iron age and were effectively subjugated by Matabele king Lobengula, a descendent of the Zulu tribe.Colonization brought peace and prosperity to the area which would become Southern Rhodesia. In 1923 the country became a self-governing colony of Britain and already had an impressive infrastructure of roads, railways, farms, mines and industry. This is an account of growing up in this wonderful country, with temperate climate, low crime, fertile land and a profusion of fauna and flora. Life was good for everybody.In 1964 the British and American governments, with the support of the United Nations, made the decision to dismantle the loyal, responsible government that had ruled the country well since 1923 and replace it with self-serving and inexperienced politicians supported by Russia and China. In 1965, the Rhodesian government declared its independence from Britain in a last-ditch attempt to save the country. Shortly after this the United Nations Security Council declared Rhodesia a threat to world peace and imposed crippling sanctions and supported a terrorist war to collapse the economy. In 1980 there was no choice but to capitulate and control of the government was turned over to the Chinese-backed party of Robert Mugabe. A beautiful, peaceful and successful country has now reverted to anarchy and chaos, which was absolutely predictable. Everybody has lost. The Chinese have moved in.
