A Melanesian Agromyzidae (Diptera)
revision of

Abstract : The 49 speeies of Agromyzidae hitherto known in Melanesia have been revised and
additional unidentified material in the Bishop Museum has been examined. Five new species
described are: Ophiomyia dumosa, O. phalloi･de sand Phytomy2a tnu･sitat afrom Vanuatu,
Phytobia b(fistut aform Guadalcanal and Pseudonapomy2a omma,ta from New Caledonia .Nine
species knowii from Lhe Orienta lregion are recorded as new to Melaiiesi a,Of the 64 speeies now
confirmed, 30 species (47 %) are endemic, 31 are present elsewhere in the Orienta land Australian
regions, or in the Pacifi carea, and 3 are considered as introduetions.

Intreduction
The Agroniyzidae in Melanesia has hitherto been poor]y known taxonomically and biologicall y.Bezzi
Cl928) made a start in studying leaf-mines in Fiji ,and reeorded the occurrence of eight species:

and ,Japa7zagro'rTzzlza were described as new to science by SpeRcer (1962a) ,In my earlier revision of the
Polynesian Agromyzidae (onl yin New Hebride sand Fiji )and two papers on New Caledonian and Papuan
spe ¢ies, 30 Melanesian species were i.dentified ,of which 10 were new, in the genera Mela"agTo7nyxa,
Ophiomyia, Japanagromy2a, Phytobia, Cal.ycomyxa ,Li,rtomy2a and Pseuaona･pomyxa. After then, 12
new and 11 newly recordeel species were deseribed from the Bismarcks and New Hebt"ides by Spencer
(1966).
Five new and nine newly recorded species described in the present paper are based upon the
unidentified material in the Melanesiaii Diptera collection of the B. P. Bishop Museum, Honululu. Most of the
specimens have been eollected by Dr. N. L. H. Krauss during the past 35 years.
Materials and Methods
About 1,200 dried specimens of the Melanesian agromyzid leaf-miners identifie din this study were

abdominal tergites and fift hto seventh st/ernites, respectively. The male genitali awere macerated with
3096KOII and transferred to distill ewdater,for dissection .After the drawing sof eaeh essential strueture the
genitali awith pregenita labdominal segments were put into a polyethylene tvbule with glycerol and the
tubule was pinned with the specirnen.
The holotypes of new species are deposit,e din the collection of the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii
96817, U. S.A.

Faunistical character[istic
The Agromyzidae is relatively poorly represented in Melanesia as ii iNew Guinea C57 species in tota lby
Spencer ,l977). Only 13 genera of the world total of 26 are represent,ed in Melanesia as in New Guinea and
Avstralia. Al, the present time, 64 speeies are known frorn the Bismarcks, So]omons, Vanuatu, New Caledonia
and Fiji .The generic distribution in Mclanesia and number of species are shown in Table 1.

The generi¢ distributional pat,tern re"ects primarily the fauna of the Oriental origin. Mela,nagro7n,y=a is
the dominant genus in Melanesia as well as in other island sof the tropies ,The relative!y high number of
species in Ophtomyta, JQpanctgromyxa and Pseudonapomyga is also noteworthy. The specific diversities
in these genera are apparently great ,while Agromyza, LtT'iomy:･ aand Phytomyxa, mainly distribute din
temperate areas of the northern hemisphere, are present wit,h only one or two species, respectively. In
Melanesia, a considerable reduction in species is accounted for by the striking reduction in number within
these three large genera in t,he Oriental region (289 speeies in t,ota lby Sasakawa, 1977, 1996), On the other
hand, in Australia O,phio7n.yia ,Melanagromyora and PhytoZiriomy= ･a are well represented with 84 species.
Thirty of the 64 species known in Melanesia rnust be treated as endemic at present. These endernic
species are present in eight genera as follows:

It was ef interest to find a high degree of speciation in two new species, Ophz'omgyia dumesa and O,
palloides, which are distinctiv ein having the external bristl eon the fore tibia and the peculiar rnale
genitalia .In dunzosa, the dorsall yspjnose epandrium may be an apomorphie character, because i tseems to
be useful for the premating behavio rin addition to the general function of spinose surstylus. O. phalloides
shows the relationship with Q conspicuu (Spence ri)n the structure of phallus with the spinose lobes and
the leng egg-guide, and also its larv aindicat, etshe stem-miner as the mining habit of consptcua, although the
host plant is not ascertained at present.
Phytobia bijlist? tn,h lsap, appears to be affiliated with Phytobta seticopta CSasakaw a19,63) from Borneo
and Philippines ,if 'it is aeeepted that the presence of fore-tibial bristle ,the narrow gena and the short
ultirnate seetion of M,s. 4are symplesiomorphic. On the other hand, it may be shared with it snearest relatives
in the Neotropical speeies, such as Phytobia mentul- Sasakawa ,1992, and P. piptnna Sasakawa, l992, with
the synapornorphic character in the yellow eoloration on head and mesoscutum, from the viewpoint of the
structure of distiphallu swith the long, rnembranous tubules distall y.Further study will be necessary to
understand whether the species with similar pale or dark coloration, or with similar structure of the
distiphallu sk,nown from the Orient and South Ameriea, are truly monophyletic,
Pseudonapo'inyaa m'uttimoda Spncer, 1966, from Bismarek Archipelago, and Pseudonapom/yxa
ommata n. sp. are differentiate dfrem the genera lspecies in the spicata-group wlt,h the angulate first
flagellomere of antenna, the short second eostal section and the whjte fringe on the calypter of the
Gramineae rniners. Bttt ,the male genltali aof oinma･ta are generally sirnilar to those of the spicata-group.
rl"he speeies with the round firs tflagellomer emay be the ancestral group, and it is suggested that the species,
distribute dworldwidely, with the angulate flagellomer eevolved subsequent]y.

orientatis Spencer,1962,fromPapua New Guinea,

The shiny greenish body and whitish squamal fring eare distincti vfeeatures of this species, Essential
characters of the male genitali awere describe dby Sasakawa (1963b).
This species is widespread throughout the Pacific and from South Africa to northern Australia and
central Polynesia ,and is new to the fauna of the east Melanesia. The larva is known as a seed-feeder in the

Among twelve Melanesian species, only two spceies: Opiziomyia cornuta de lvleijer e1,910, and O.
Ianta,7zae CFrogga t1t9,19), are provided with the cunspicueus facial carina dividin gthe bases of antennae
and a strong vibrissal faseiculu sin the male as une of the generie characters. Other spec/ies lack these
generic eharacters, but are clearly confirmed by their ma]e genitali awith the asymmetric basiphallu sor the
presence of spinulose lobes on the distiphall uass belonging to Ophiomyia, .

This species lacks the vibrissal fasciculus in the ma]e as in atralis, but its squamai fring ets black (white
in aLra,lts) aiid gena is broader (abou tlf5 of eye height) .Also, the spinulose, large membranous lobes on the
dist,iphall uasre especial]y distinctive ,It seems to be the stem-miners of many genera of Aste ･raceae
(SPencer,1977b).

This ]eaf-minin gspecies on Scaevota ,and Goodenia spp. (Goodeniace ahea)s an acute vibrissal angle
with 1'ascieulus in the male, narrow but distinc tfacia learina and white squamal fringe ,The phallus was
i!lustrated by Spencer (1977b ,fig s91-92). This species is widespread throughout Polynesia CSasakawa,
1963c).

(lphiomyia dumosa n. sp. (Fig 1s-4)
Male. Head black; octellar triangle and parafrontalia weakly shining; nntenna brownish black, arista
brown; palpus black. Thorax ttnd abdomen shiny black, but mesoseutum except for latera lsides and
scutellum pollinose, only a litt lweeakly shining, Wing hyaline ,calypt,er gray, with margin black ,fringe dark
brown; halt,er entirely brown. Legs b]ac/k.
