INTRODUCTION
The purpose of th is study was to form ulate a hand
book for the teachers of the Los Nietos Elementary School
D is tr ic t. The attempt has been made to fix re sp o n sib ility
and to place m atters of procedure on a policy b a sis. This
w ill re lie v e the adm inistration of the task of making
decisions on problems each time th a t they occur. I t is
also believed th a t the mental health of teachers w ill be
improved by the fact th a t they w ill have a guide to which
they may re fe r i f they are in doubt as to some m atter of
d is tr ic t policy .
A ll teachers are urged to read th is handbook care
fu lly and to keep i t in a handy place so th a t i t may be
re fe rre d to re a d ily . The handbook is not complete, i t is
arranged so th a t i t may be e a sily revised and kept up to
d ate. I t does not attem pt to deal w ith m atters of general
philosophy, but ra th e r, it deals sp e c ific a lly with p o lic ie s
which a ffe c t the teach ers of the Los Nietos Elementary
School D is tric t. I t is taken for granted th at the te a c h e r’s
educational philosophy w ill be provided for in his pre
service and in -serv ice tra in in g .
Since the d is tr ic t is growing so rap id ly , i t w ill be
necessary to add several new teachers each year. I t is
hoped th a t th is handbook may serve as a special help to

these tea ch e rs. In the p a stj the school has been small
and the estab lish ed teach ers have been able to do an
adequate job of o rien tin g the new tea ch e rs. As d esirab le
as th is p rac tic e may be, i t is no longer adequate in view
of the rapid growth which is now in store for th e d i s t r ic t .
The estab lished teachers must s t i l l do th e ir p a rt to make
th e new teachers feel at home, but in ad d itio n , the hand
book w ill be a guide to d i s t r ic t procedure.
There has been no attem pt to include a course of
study in th is handbook since the Los Nietos School D istric t
follow s the Los Angeles County Course of Study. The teach
ers of Los Nietos have worked clo sely with the county
supervisors and coordinators, and as a r e s u lt, have bene
f ite d g re a tly . I t is hoped th a t the new teach ers w ill
continue to make use of th is excellent resource which is
provided by th e County O ffice.
The educational philosophy of the Los Nietos School
is recognized for i t s progressive q u a litie s . Because of
the high percentage of pupils of Mexican ancestry and th e ir
accompanying language handicap, it is extremely important
th a t th e teacher evaluate each pupil in re la tio n to his own
expectancy. The p rin c ip a l and supervisors w ill be of
a ssista n c e to teachers in working with th is problem.
