Abstract Anewspeciesandanewsubspeciesofpassalidbeetlesbelongingtothe
genusAcel・aius KAup, A fujiokaeand A.pilifeil, tobae,are described from Sumatra.

Antenna with six short lamellatesegments. Labrum hairy, angles rounded,
anterior border weaklyemarginate, left anglemoreprominent than theright one.
Left mandiblenormal; upper toothof leftmandiblestronglyconvexwith thetip
weakly depressed internally; anterior lower toothof leftmandiblesimple; lowest
terminaltoothofrightmandibleminuteorabsent;upperdenticleofrightanterior
lowertoothobtuseorrectangular,loweroneverysmall. Anterior borderofmentum
weaklynotchedmadially.
Head with bothanterior angles not prominent. Left outer tubercleproduced
antero-interna11y,distinctlybifidatthedistalend,externalapexprominentanteriorly,
internalapexprominentinternally,basalswellingofexternalborderindistinct. Right
outertuberclequadrangularor triangular,externalapexdistinctlyprominentanteriad,
internaloneobtuse,notprominent,externalborderweaklyemarginate,internalborder
veryweakly arcuateor obtuselyangulate. Inner tubercleprominent upward; rjdge
betweenthetwoinner tuberclesemarginateor nearlystraightindorsalview;parietal
ridgesinastraightlineasawhole. Depressedareaofheadandareabetweenouter

Pronotum withhair-bearingpuncturesinmarginalgroovesandlateralscar:me-
diangroovealmost absent.
Elytrahairyinanterior vertical portionsbetweensutureand fifthgrooveandin
frontofshoulder;first ribhairynearapex;seventhribandseventhgroovewithafew
hair-bearingpunctures posteriorly;eighth ribhairless;eighthgrooveand ninth rib
sparselyhairyanteriad,verysparselysoposteriad; tenth ribhairy atanteriorJ/5to
1/4;tenthgroovehairythroughout.
Posterior plateof prosternum hairless, mesosternum smooth with lateral scar
veryshallowor indistinct; mesepisternumsmoothposteriorly,denselycoveredwith
largepuncturesdorsallyandposteriorly,clothedwithminutesetaealongdorsalborder.
Centralareaofmetasternumsmooth;anteriorintermediateandlateralareasdensely
coveredwithhair-bearingpunctures;posteriorintermediateareaalmostsmooth,though
rather densely covered with hair-bearing punctures along posterior border. Each
abdominalsternitewithlateralscarsverysmall.

Length: 35-38mm.
Holotype: Takengon, Aceh,VIII-1993;paratypes: 2 4 , same data

as for theholotype. Theholotypewill bepreservedin theNationalScienceMuseum
(Nat. Hist),Tokyo.
This newspecies is verysimilar to A a/taceosternus KuwERT from theMalay
Peninsula,thoughdifferingintheshapeoftheuppertoothof leftmandible.

GRAVELY(1918)fromBorneo,SumatraandJava. HINcKs(1938)describedA.pal・、,ulus
fromtheMalayPeninsula,andconsideredthatitisthereplacementofA.pi/fe, inthe
MalayPeninsula. KoN,UEDAandJoHKl(1993)describedA hikida1'fromBorneo,but
itseemstobeGRAVELY'sBorneanA.pl'liteli (notPERCHERON's),andthenewsubspecies
tobedescribedbelowisidenticalwithGRAVELY'sSumatranA.pilife,.
This newsubspeciesdiffersfromthenominotypica1subspecies in thefollowing
points:leftoutertuberclemoreweaklybifid;rightoutertuberclemoreorlessquad-
rangular;anterior lower toothofleftmandiblesimple:lowest terminaltoothof right
mandiblemore distinct. It differs from Bornean A hikidai inthefollowingpoints:
lowestterminaltoothofrightmandiblelarger;uppertoothofleftmandible(orpos-
teriorconvexityofleftmandible)distinctlybifidatthetip;metasternumalmosthair_
less between mesocoxae. Insomeof thenorthernSumatranspecimens, themeso_
sternumisclothedwithafewtosomehair-bearingpuncturesalongthemedianline.

olemore or lessquadrangular. However,thesedifferencesdonotalwaysappear jn
theSumatranspecimens.
