Abstract Coeliodes(Coeliodes)a,namlanus,anewceutorhynchineweevilisde-
scribedfromtheRyukyuIslands,SouthwestJapan.Thisnewspeciesfeedsonthepollenof
anevergreentree,Castanopsissieboldiisubsp.lutchuensis,andcanbeseparatedfromthe
congenersbythecharacteristicvestiture,mucronatetibiaeinthemale,andthenarrower
aedeaguswithapairofscleritesintheinternalsac.ThisspeciessomewhatresemblesTri-
chocoetiodesexcavatus(HUsTAcHE),thoughitcanbeeasilydistinguishedfromthelatter
bythestructureofeachscaleinarowofeachelytra1interval,andthesecondandfifthven-
tritesinthemale.
Introduction
The ceutorhynchinegenus Coeliodes ScHoENHERR, l837 comprises about 50
speciesofsmall-sizedweevilsofovalformdistributedthroughouttheworldexcept for
theAustralianRegion,andisdiscriminatedfromitsrelatedgenerabyacombinationof
thefollowingcharacters:antennaewithsevensegmentsinthefunicle;elytra1intervals
inerm; femorainerm; tibiae attene corbelofhindtibialong,ascendinganteriorly;
andpectoralcanalreachingthemetasternum.Coeliodesweevilsareknowntoassoci-
atewiththetreesofthefamiliesBetulaceaeandFagaceae,thelarvaegrowinthe
ew-
ersorleafbudsandtheadultsfeedonthesofttissuesoftheleafbuds,youngleavesor
thepartsOfflowers(WAGNER,1942;HOFFMANN,1954;DIEcKMANN,1972;MoRIMoT0,
1984;KOCH,1992).
In East Asia, seven species were describedby ScHUI?TzE (1898), HUsTAcHE
(1916),KONo(1935),andVossandCHUJ0(1960),thoughCoeliodessetterScHULTzE
waslater removedbyKoRoTYAEv (1996)toanewgenusConocoeliodesasthetype
species.Recently,KoRoTYAEv(1997)reviewedtheFarEasternspeciesof thisgenus
withanerectionofanewsubgenus,descriptionsofsixnewspeciesandnewdistribu-
tionrecordsoftwospecies.Astheresult, l4speciesintotalhavehithertobeenknown
fromtheRussianFarEast,China, theKoreanPeninsula,JapanandTaiwaninthree
subgenera. However, nospecieshaseverbeenknownuntil now from theRyukyu Is-
lands,SouthwestJapan.
In thispaper,I amgoingtodescribeanewspeciesbelongingto thenominotypi-
ca1subgenusofCoeliodesfromtheRyukyuIslands.Theyweretakenon theflowersof

Castanopsissieboldii subsp. lutchuensisofthe familyFagaceae, andtheadults are
consideredtobeapollenfeederoftheplant.
MaterialsandMethods
Thematerialsusedin thisstudywerecollectedbythepresentauthorandother
entomologists from 1963 to t997, by beatingor net-sweeping on the Islands of
Amami-0shima and Tokunoshima. For dissection, specimens were relaxed in hot
water. Then theabdomenwasremoved fromthebody,and cleaned inheated 10%
OHsolution for haifaday to removethegenitalia. Theremovedgenitaliawere
mountedonslideglasseswithglycerol,observedthroughtheopticalmicroscopeand
sketchedwiththeaidofanattacheddrawingtube. A量erexamination, thegenitalia
werepreservedinaplasticvial filledwithglycerol.Externalstructurewasobserved
and illustratedwithastereoscopicmicroscopeequippedwithadrawing tube. Details
of some external structures were examined with scanning electron microscope
a
(PHILIPSXL30/CP)under 80to i lemagnification.Theholotypeandsomeofthe
paratypesaredepositedintheLaboratoryofEntomology,TokyoUniversity ofAgri-
culture,andmostoftheparatypesareinthefollowingcollections:EntomologicalLab-
oratory,EhimeUniversity,Matsuyama(ELEU),EntomologicalLaboratory,Facultyof
Agriculture, KyushuUniversity (ELKU), privatecollectionsofH. KoJIMA,Fukuoka
(PCHK),H.YosHITAKE,Tokyo(PCHY)andM.HoRIKAwA,Kanagawa(PCMH).
Description
Coeliodes(Coeliodes)amalnlanusYosHITAKE,sp
nov.
(Figs.1-4)
Male. Reddishbrown;head,basalhalfofrostrum,club,meso-andmetasterna,
venterexcept forthedepressionofapicalsegmentblackish;coxae, femoraandtibiae
tingedwithbrown;pronotumblackishexcept for antero-marginalpart; elytrawith
blackishtransversebasalandpremedianbands inentirewidth,whicharelongitudi-
nallyconnectedbyadarkareabetweenthefirstand fourthintervals, thepremedian
bandbeingarcuateposteriorlyoneachside,sutureandmarginsblackish.
Headcoarselyandcloselyreticulate-punctate,clothedwithrecumbentbrownish
scales, bearingashallowdepressionon foreheadbetweeneyes,withsubrecumbent
scalesalonginnermarginofeacheye.Eyessomewhatconvex fromoutlineofhead.
Rostrum 1.10-1.15timesas longaspronotum,weaklyandevenlycurved.Antennae
insertedalittlebeforethemiddleofrostrum, funiclewithfirstsegmentaslongassec-
on(i, thirda littleshorter thansecon aslongasfourth, fifthtoseventhsubequa1in
lengthtooneanother,eachalittleshorterthanfourth,seventhalmostaslongasbroad,
cluboblong-ovate,finelypubescentinapicalthird.
Prothorax 137-1.42 timesaswideas long,widestnear thebase,slightly nar-

rowedtowardtheapicalthird,thencerapidlynarrowedtowardweaksubapicalconstric-
tion;dorsumdistinctlyreticulate,withashallowsubapicalmediandept'ession,clothed
withdenserecumbent orsubrecumbentyellowish-greysubrectangularscales,which
becomebrownishonmedianpartandbearwhitishovatescalesalongposteriormargin.
ScutellumIanceolate,keele withwhitishovalgroundscales.
Elytra1.05-1.1timesaslongaswide,subpara11el-sidedinbasalhalves, thenal-
moststraightly narrowedtowardsubapical calli;dorsumwithwhitishoblongscales,
which formthreeindefinitebandsinsubbasal,medianandapicalparts;eachinterval
withamedianrowofyellowishgreyscales,whicharesubrecumbent,slender,slightly
dilateddistaci,truncatedattheapexandmixedwithblackishonesinthedarkarea.
Pygidiumcoarselyandsparselypunctate,andthinlyclothedwithfinerecumbent
setae.
Legsclothedwithwhitishrecumbent hairyscales; each tibiamucronateat the
apex; fronttibiaslightlydilatedoutwardsinapical fourth, fringedwithstoutbrownish
setaeattheexpansion.
Undersideclothedwithwhitishandyellowishgreyoblongscales.Pectoralcanal
reachingthemiddleofmetasternum.Venterwithbasal twoventritesdepressedinthe
middleandthinlycoveredwithfinewhitishscales,fifthventritetransverselydepressed
inthemiddle,theposteriorwalletthedepressionbeing fringedwithapairoftuftsof
longerectbrownishsetae,whichareinternallycurved.

Aedeaga1bodyslender,graduallynarrowedapica andevenlyroundedatthetip;

Female. Similartomale,withtheexceptionofthefollowingfeatures: rostrum

Biology. TheadultsweretakenontheflowersofCastanopsissleboldii subsp.
1utch1lensisinMarchandApril.Thespeciesseemedtobeapollen-feeder,sincemany
pollengrainswerefoundinthealimentarycanalsofseveralmaterials.

Remarks
Thebodycolorofthisnewspeciesvariesfromreddishbrowntoblackish. The
rostrumexcept forthebaseandthepronotumexcept forthemedianpartoftenbecome
reddishbrown.Thebasalandthepremedianblackishbandsoftheelytrasometimesdi-
minishtoareversesubtrianguIarpatch.Theelytra1vestiturecanbefallenout,sothat
theelytrasometimesbecomeglabrouswiththeexceptionofascalerowoneachinter-
val.
Thenominotypica1subgenusofCoeliodesischaracterizedbythepresenceoftwo
or threescalybandsoftheelytra,andcontainssevenspeciesknown from East Asia.
Becauseofhavingthreewhitishscalybandsonitselytra,C amamlanus sp nov. is
consideredtobeamemberofthesubgenus,andisdistinctiveenoughnot tobecon-
fusedwithanyotherspeciesfromEastAsia.Thisspeciespossessesamedianrowof
subrecumbentscalesoneachelytra1interval,amucroattheapexofthe front tibiain
themale,theslenderaedeaga1body,andapairofslenderscleritesintheinternalsac.
Thesestructuresarenotpresentinanyotherspeciesfromtheregion. Inhavingame-
dianscalyrowoneachelytra1intervalandamucroateachtibialapex,thisspecies
somewhat resemblesTrichocoeliodesexcavatus(HUsTAcHE),whosesystematicpoSi-
tjonjsnotdefinitelysettle thoughitcanbeeasilydistinguishedfromthelatterbythe
followingpoints:eachscaleinarowsubrecumbent,notsuberect;depressionofsecond
ventriteinthemalewithoutblackishspine;fifthventritewithatransversedepression
fringedwithlongerectsetae.

吉武 啓:琉球列島から発見されたアカサルゾウムシ属のl新極. - 琉球列島の 美大
島と徳之島から発見されたアカサルゾウムシ属Coeliodesの1新種を, Camam,an,,sと命名して
記載した. 本種は, 狭義のCoeliodes?E属の他種とは以下の3点で明確に識別される. 1)上翅の

長く, 内袋に1対の細長い交尾片を有する. 本極はまた, 1および2の点においてfife/,ocoe-
1iodese、.-ca、,atusに似てぃるが, 列を構成している鱗片の直立の度合いがより低いこと, 雄の第2
腹節の四みが黒色の太短い剛毛に覆われないこと, および来端節が横に幅広く[1「1み, その後縁
は直立した長い刺毛によって縁取られることなどによって容易に区別できる. なお, 奄美大島
において早春にリュウキュウジイの花から採集されてぃることやいくっかの個体の消化管内に
多数の花粉粒が認められたことから, 本極の成!」Jは花粉食であろうと考えられる.
