Introduction: Kant and the
language of philosophy
The influence of Kants philosophy has been, and continues to be, so
profound and so widespread as to have become imperceptible. Philo¬
sophical inquirywithin both the analytic and the continental’ traditions
is unthinkable without the lexical and conceptual resources bequeathed
by Kant. Even outside philosophy, in the humanities, social sciences and
naturalsciences,Kantianconceptsandstructuresofargumentare ubiqui¬
tous. Anyone practicing literary or social criticism is contributing to the
Kantian tradition; anyone reflecting on the epistemological implications
of their work will find themselves doing sowithin parameters established
byKant.Indeed, manycontemporarydebates,whether inaesthetics, liter
¬
ary or political theory, show a peculiar tendency to mutate into disputes
in Kant exegesis. All in all, in the less than 200 years since the death of
its author, Kantian philosophy has established itself as an indispensable
point of intellectual orientation.
While few would quarrel with the fact of Kant’s influence, opinions
differwidelyregardingitssignificanceanddesirability,and nowheremore
than in his innovations with respect to the language of philosophy. It is
widelyrecognizedthatKanttransformedphilosophicallanguage,butthere
is little agreement as to whether this was a good thing; Isaiah Berlin for
oneconsidershim tohave‘ruined’ it.Whatever thefinalverdict,themain
problemfacingthelexicographerismore technical,andconcernstheway
in which Kant achieved this transformation and, to a lesser extent, his
motives for doing so. For Kant did not only extend Christian Wolff’s
translation of Latin philosophical terminologyinto thevernacular, but he
also confronted it with areas of experience previously excluded from
philosophy. He reinvented philosophical language by introducing new
termsandconceptsfromoutside philosophy,aswellasself-consciouslyre
¬
defining many of its traditional ones. The matrix for this linguistic and
conceptual transformation liesin thelectureswhich hedeliveredfor over
four decades in a wide range of subjects. In these he explicated the tra¬
ditional philosophical concepts of the officially prescribed textbooks by
