This la a histo ry of the Columbia Basin irrig a tio n pro
je c t, the story of man1© effo rts of bringing” w ater to th© arid
portions of the Big Bend country of cen tral Washington* Th©
main them© of th is work begins w ith the e ffo rts of the home
steaders, about 1900, to find, a means of irrig a tin g th e ir lands
in th is region* Various schemes fo r irrig a tio n by gravity,
pumping, and artesian methods were considered at th at time*
In th® beginning, these effo rts were community a ffa irs,
but by 1919 the state of Washington made the project an of
fic ia l on© by authorising the Columbia Basin Survey Commission
to Investigate and survey th© area for both gravity and pump
ing methods of irrigatio n * Four year© la te r in 1923, the pro
ject became a fed eral on© when Congress authorised th® United
S tates Reclamation Service to conduct investigations* During
th© follow ing years th© Investigations broadened from the en
gineering feature® of construction to those of so il, economics,
r
and m arkets• Toward th© end of th© 1920 fs a growing need for
e le c tric a l power entered into the p ictu re, and In 1932 th©
Bureau of Reclamation recommended th at a combined power and
Irrig atio n Columbia 'Project be authorized by Congress* The
fallow ing year th© immense enterprise was started as a public
works development and was form ally authorized as a separate
project In 1935*
