Preface
This book is meant as an aid for the study of Chinese herbal medicine. It can also be used to help prepare for
Chinese herbal examinations, be they school course exams or state and national licensing/certification exams. It
contains over 630 sample questions on all aspects of Chinese herbal medicine. In general, one must have a
good grasp of the following areas of expertise before one can be said to be knowledgeable in Chinese herbal
medicine:

The following questions test all the above areas of Chinese medical knowledge. Because there is a huge amount
of material which must be memorized before one can use this system of herbal medicine in a professionally
standard and systematic way, the more one rehearses and goes over this information, the sooner one will be
able to use it competently in clinical practice.
Chinese herbal medicine is not safe and effective because it is Chinese or because it is herbal. Many of the
medicinals used in Chinese herbal medicine do not originate from China and many are not herbal, being animal
or mineral in origin. Chinese herbal medicine is the safe and effective medicine it is because of the system or
methodology by which it is prescribed. When medicinals are prescribed based on this methodology, one can be
sure that the medicinals match the individual patient's pattern, not just their disease.
However, two things make the real-life application of this sophisticated methodology hard to practice. These
are 1) the huge number of bits of information which must be memorized to a high degree of precision and 2) a
very mature degree of judgment. While this second requirement is almost impossible to teach, the first does
yield to frequent repetition. Any and all teaching aids and methodologies which reinforce such frequent
repetition help solidify one of the necessary prerequisites of making this system work in clinical practice.
As the reader should quickly see, the correct answer of most of the questions in this book depends on the
correct use of technical terminology. The terminology used in this book is based on Nigel Wiseman's English-
Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary of Chinese Medicine, Hunan Science & Technology Press, Changsha,
1995. For definitions of these terms, students should see Wiseman's Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine,
Paradigm Publications, Brookline, MA, 1998. Chinese medicinals are identified first
