This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Montblanc Cultural Foundation: an occasion
to acknowledge considerable achievements, while recognising the challenges that lie
ahead. Since its inception in 1992, through its various yet interrelated programmes, the
Foundation continues to appreciate the significant role that art can play in instigating key
shifts, and at times, ruptures, in our perception of and engagement with the cultural,
social and political conditions of our times. Departing from this awareness, and coupled
with the enduring conviction in the irrefutable link between knowledge and the written
word, the Foundation’s mission is underpinned by a profound understanding that several

key players demand our support and recognition for a thriving arts culture to flourish.
This has been manifested in the Foundation’s equal commitment to both, the artists
who, needless to say, form the nucleus of any artistic community, and the patrons whose
support provides artists with the various types of resources and opportunities they need
to develop and disseminate their work.
Since 1992, through the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award, the Foundation
has awarded some 280 patrons from more than 20 countries, recognising the considerable
efforts and sacrifices that true patronage entails.
The awardees have ranged from not-for-profit organisations to individual philanthropists.

They have included museum directors whose innovative programming, despite financial
hardship, has made it possible for their respective communities to continue having access 4

Peggy Guggenheim had many of her favourite pieces
surrounding her at home in Venice: a wide range of
masterworks by Picasso, Braque, Duchamp, Léger,

Mondrian, Kandinsky, Arp, Miró, Giacometti, Klee,
Ernst, Magritte, Dalí, Pollock, Rothko, Calder, Moore

Peggy Guggenheim in Venice – the ‘Ultima Dogaressa’. After a brief period in New York,
Peggy Guggenheim moved back to Europe in 1947. Establishing herself in Venice, she
influenced the European art world from this Italian city for almost three decades. In 1948
she acquired the historic Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal and converted it into
a home with exhibition rooms for her collection. Open to the public, her palazzo attracted
intellectuals and artists from all over the world. Because of her glamourous persona,
the Venetians affectionately called Peggy Guggenheim La ultima Dogaressa (the last
duchess). After her death, the private palazzo was restructured into a public museum in
accordance with her will.
