HPS -
HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY AND SOCIOLOGY OF SCIENCE
As you (hopefully) know by now, Lyman Briggs College challenges students to engage with
science and math through coursework, hands-on labs, and through interactions with peers,
faculty, and others within the Briggs community.
Yet, Briggs students go even further than this.
One unique aspect of the Briggs curriculum is the emphasis on the history, philosophy, and
sociology of science (HPS). Lyman Briggs encourages students to think critically about the
impacts scientific discovery have had on human society and culture. Our HPS courses challenge
students to take a closer look at issues such as the ethics of science and medicine, the effects of
technology on the environment, the study of science-fiction literature and film, and beyond.
Bridging the sciences and humanities through interdisciplinary teaching and research is the
mission of Lyman Briggs College.
What HPS-related topics are you interested in exploring further?
You may explore more HPS topics by getting to know our HPS and other faculty at:

Select a professor of interest and read more about them in their Bio.

The Lyman Briggs Academic and Student Affairs Office strives to provide an open and welcoming
environment for our students as an entry to the Lyman Briggs and MSU community. We work to
educate students, as well as challenge and support them to think critically about their decisions,
their academic pursuits and their personal goals.
Academic advising is based on a system of shared responsibility between you and your advisor. It
is an ongoing conversation that goes beyond course selection, and our goal is to assist you as you
explore the curriculum, experience college life and prepare for life after college.
What you can expect from your ADVISOR:
- Empowerment and encouragement to:
DISCOVER your strengths, skills and abilities
DREAM about your hopes for the future
DESIGN your academic and co-curricular activities toward your dreams
DELIVER your plan
- Knowledge of the curriculum within their department/college
- Referrals to resources, people and departments across campus (e.g., career and personal
counseling, study abroad, tutoring, extracurricular activities, etc.)
- Assistance with evaluation and re-evaluation, as needed, of progress toward your
academic and graduation goals
What your Academic Advisor will expect from YOU for a successful advising appointment:
- To come prepared, with questions in mind, to discuss your goals
- To be open to academic and non-academic suggestions that your advisor may bring to
your attention based on the interests and goals you have made him/her aware of
- To be ready to make decisions regarding academic and personal goals

explore the possibilities are all a valuable part of your BRIGGS experience at MSU.
