Mary McClure
Dear Friends,
chair elect
Gail Meriweather
Congratulations! Thanks to you – Harvesters’ donors, agencies and advocates –
past chair we are Feeding America’s 2011 Food Bank of the Year. This is an honor that we
proudly share with everyone in our community. At a time when the need for
Wesley Fields
food assistance is at record levels, you are making it possible for Harvesters to
secretary/treasurer serve as a role model for food banks across the nation in how we are feeding
hungry children, families and seniors.
Dan Weaver
Across our region there are nearly 375,000 food insecure people. These are
parents, skipping meals so that their children have food. They are seniors, our
“Greatest Generation,” deciding whether to fill a prescription or buy groceries.
Directors
And, sadly, far too many of them are children, going to school every day hungry.
One in four children in our region is at risk of not having enough to eat.
Dan Crumb
Thanks to you, Harvesters’ network of more than 620 nonprofit agencies
Wynne Dillon
distributed more than 38 million pounds of food in fiscal year 2011 – a historic
high for our food bank. The BackSnack program served a record 13,525 students
John George
each week, and Harvesters’ nutrition education classes reached more than
15,300 children and adults.
Rich Jones
Thanks to you we are providing food and hope to one in eight people in our
Russell Mosburg
community. This year more than 3,600 community food drives provided 1.9
million meals to hungry people. Financial gifts from nearly 31,000 generous
Mayra Aguirre Raplinger
donors helped Harvesters serve 66,000 different people each week. And, if
Harvesters had to replace our dedicated volunteers, we would have to nearly
Diane Smith
double the size of our workforce.
Father Pat Tobin More than 32 years ago, Harvesters was created as our community’s response
to hunger. The Food Bank of the Year recognition celebrates our community’s
Valerie Nicholson Watson
legacy of generosity. Each can, each dollar and each hour donated to Harvesters
is precious. Thanks to you, we can continue to provide food and hope to our
Dennis Welzenbach
community.
Lori Wright
Thanks to you… and your gifts of money
27,919 donors contributed
financially to Harvesters with gifts
ranging from $1 to $805,000.
Harvesters’ BackSnack program
provided 413,370 backpacks full
of nutritious, kid-friendly food to
13,525 students a week in 301
schools.
Grocery store shoppers gave
$331,840 through Check-Out
Hunger donations of $1, $5 and
$10 during Harvesters’ holiday
coupon program.
“I know I won’t be starving when I get home. “We are a neighborhood school and so when
I know some people out there are really you look around and see some of the new
trying to help me when I’m hungry. I thank development going on just on the other side of
them a lot because if they weren’t there I’d our school, it makes it seem as if we wouldn’t
just be hungry.” have a hunger problem, but we really do.
Jimmy, 10, Harvesters’ BackSnack Student The BackSnacks that we send home on the
Kellybrook Elementary School, Liberty, Mo. weekends… may be the only food some kids
get on the weekend before they get back to us.”
Andrea Wilson, Principal
Kellybrook Elementary School, Liberty, Mo.
Thanks to you… and your gifts of food
“To be hungry is a feeling that’s
hard to describe. It’s that feeling
that you’re alone in the world, and
no one cares about you. It’s a
devastating feeling. To be able to
come here is a blessing.”
Ishmael McGill, Jr., first-time visitor
Metro Lutheran Ministry food pantry
Harvesters distributed a total of 38,042,252 pounds of food and
households products in fiscal year 2011.
Individuals, groups and businesses held 3,608 community food drives,
collecting 1,935,534 pounds of food.
Food pantries in Harvesters’ network provided food to 473,220
households.
“We could easily triple the amount of food we give away if we had
it… Every year when we look back at our statistics, it surprises
us that roughly half of the people who come to our pantry come
for the first time.”
Jim Glynn, Executive Director, Metro Lutheran Ministry
Harvesters’ 2011 Circle of Hope Agency of the Year
Thanks to you… and your gifts of time
Each month, an average 5,004
people volunteered their time to
support Harvesters’ mission.
Volunteers gave 130,253 hours of
service to help sort and repackage
food in Harvesters’ Volunteer
Outreach Center.
Harvesters would need to nearly
double the size of its workforce
to accomplish the work done by
volunteers.
“To me, it is simply unconscionable that in a society as
plentiful as ours, there are people who still go hungry.
The reasons behind that disparity are large, complex and
overwhelming – what can one person really do in the face
of that?
At Harvesters, I’ve found that one person really can make a
difference. With each can that is sorted, box that is packed,
or carton that is labeled, somebody in need in our community
is being helped. And that makes a world of difference to me!”
Connie Strand, Harvesters’ Volunteer
Recipient of Harvesters’ 2011 Circle of Hope for Volunteer Excellence
