The Desautels Coat-Of-Arms
By Kenneth Desautels
In an ancient region of France, known as Charolais (Charolles), an area within the
southern part of Burgandy in the year of 844, we will come upon a group of hills
called “Les Autels”. They were given the name at the request of the inhabitants of
the region where a group of mountains or plateaus resembled great flat table tops,
looking somewhat like altars of a church.
The ruler at the time was Charles II (The Bald) of the western Frankish Kingdom
(Modern France). He issued a Toulouse, an enactment or Capitulary, sanctioning
the use of the term “Autel” (French word for altar) as an official location name and
“Les Autels” became the name of the region. When in 1539, a decree was issued by
King Francois that all families were to take on surnames, the name of “DesAutels”
was already in use back in 1380 by Guiot DesAutels Captain of the Guard at Mt.
Vincent at Charolais.
Coats-of-Arms were already used as a means of identifying a family. The family
within the region of the hills called “Les Autels” was using the name but changed the
Les to Des and their name became “DesAutels” (of the Altars). In regards to the
Coat-of-Arms, Helms or crests were not yet in use, and would not come into used
until later. Thus the reason why the DesAutels Coat-of-Arms is plain, was not due to
rules or laws governing its design but rather to how old it was.
The name “DesAutels” first appeared at the time of heraldry with a coat-of-arms
which has an azure blue (sky blue) pennant with the design of a church altar in gold
and a gold heart surmounting the altar. The shape of the ecu or pennant, represents
the French Renaissance period. Being of only one color indicates it is a very old
family. The color of the field is that of the ancient bouclier, armor worn by the
Chevaliers. Azure blue indicated nobleness of purpose and gold was the highest
order. The term “surmounted” means to be above or on the altar, however it is very
unlikely that the heart would be attached to the Tabernacle as nothing is allowed to
either be placed upon the top or connected to the Tabernacle, not even flowers
under Catholic law, therefor, the gold heart would be rightfully placed above the
altar.

M.Gamache. Baptism Record 1960 Xerox copy from church but with the
name of a doctor of St Vincent Hospital in place of the pastor.
The word pastor was crossed off due to the fact that although Bruce was
baptized in church, they canceled it out as he had already been baptized
the day after birth, in the hospital, his being close to death.
14. 749-759
However, the hospital failed to notify the church and you cannot be
baptized twice and when the church found out the church voided the
record. When I applied for the record of baptism from the church, they
tried to claim that he was not baptized in church, however I told them that
I had the proof with photos. They then told us the truth and this is when
we learned that Bruce almost died the day after birth, which the hospital
never informed us.
