There are two large islands and several smaller ones, which lie in the north-west
coast of Europe. Collectively they are known as the British Isles. The largest island
is called Great Britain. The smaller one is called Ireland. Great Britain is separated
from the continent by the English Channel. The country is washed by the waters of
the Atlantic Ocean. Great Britain is separated from Belgium and Holland by the
North Sea, and from Ireland (cid:151) by the Irish Sea.
There are two states in the British Isles. One of them governs of the most of the
island of Ireland. This state is usually called the Republic of Ireland. The other state
has authority over the rest of the territory.
The official name of this country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland. But it is usually known by a shorter name (cid:151) «The United
Kingdom». The total area of Great Britain is 244,000 square km.
They say that the British love of compromise is the result of the country(cid:146)s
physical geography. This may or may not be true, but it certainly true that the land
and climate in Great Britain have a notable lack of extremes. The mountains in the
country are not very high. It doesn(cid:146)t usually get very cold in the winter or very hot in
the summer. It has no active volcanoes, and an earth tremos which does no more
than rattle teacups in a few houses which is reported in the national news media.
The insular geographical position of Great Britain promoted the development of
shipbuilding, different training contacts with other countries.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the
British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland
and about five thousand small islands. Their total area is over 244 000 square
kilometres.
The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and
Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast
respectively. Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales and does not
include Northern Ireland. But in everyday speech «Great Britain» is used to mean
the United Kingdom. The capital of the United Kingdom is London.

The British Isles are separated from the continent by the North Sea and the
English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic
Ocean and the Irish Sea.
Shakespeare called Britain a «precious stone set in the silver sea» because of its

natural beauty. It has a picturesque countryside where you can find mountains,
plains, valleys and sandy beaches. Ben Nevis in Scotland is the highest mountain,
but it is only 1343 metres high.
There are a lot of rivers in Great Britain, but they are not very long. The Severn is
the longest river, while the Thames is the deepest and the most important one.
The mountains, the Atlantic Ocean and the warm waters of Gulf Stream
influence the climate of the British Isles. It is mild the whole year round.
The UK is one of the world(cid:146)s smaller countries. Its population is over 58 million.
About 80 % of the population live in cities.
The UK is a highly developed industrial country. It is known as one of the world(cid:146)s
largest producers and exporters of machinery, electronics, textile, aircraft and
navigation equipment. One of the chief industries of the country is shipbuilding.
The UK is a constitutional monarchy. In law, the Head of State is the Queen. In
practice, the Queen reigns, but does not rule. The country is ruled by the elected
government with the Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of
two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
There are three main political parties in Great Britain: the Labour, the
Conservative and the Liberal.

THE UNITED KINGDOM
England has existed as a unified entity since the 10th century. The union
between England and Wales was enacted under the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284. In
the Act of Union of 1707, England and Scotland agreed to permanent union as
Great Britain; the legislative union of Great Britain and Ireland was implemented in
1801, with the adoption of the name the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Ireland, but in 1921, the Anglo-Irish treaty formalized a partition of Ireland,
although six northern Irish counties remained part of the United Kingdom and
became known as Northern Ireland and the current name of the country is the
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It was adopted in 1927.

Great Britain was the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th
century. It played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in
advancing literature and science.
At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth(cid:146)s surface.

United Kingdom is one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a
founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, a member of the EU, but
still remains outside the European Monetary Union. In 1999 the Scottish
Parliament, the National Assembly of Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly
were established. And it is a significant issue in the UK.
United Kingdom is located in the Western Europe, on the British Islands,
including the northern one-sixth of the island of Ireland, between the North Atlantic
Ocean and the North Sea, northwest of France. Total territory is 244,820 sq km. It
has a border with Ireland. Its climate is temperate, moderated by prevailing
southwest winds over the North Atlantic Current. The landscape of UK is mostly
rugged hills and low mountains. Nowadays United Kingdom lies near vital North
Atlantic sea lanes, only 35 km from France and linked by tunnel under the English
Channel.
The lowest point is Fenland (cid:151) 4 m; the highest one is Ben Nevis 1,343 m. Its
natural resources are coal, petroleum, natural gas, tin, limestone, iron ore, salt,
clay, chalk, gypsum, lead.
Official languages are English, Welsh (about 26 % of the population of Wales) and
Scottish, as a form of Gaelic (about 60,000 in Scotland).
Government type is constitutional monarchy. Administrative divisions of UK are
the following:
England is divided into 47 boroughs, 36 counties, 10 districts;
North Ireland is divided into 24 districts, 2 cities, 6 counties;
Scotland is divided into 32 council areas;
Wales is divided into 11 county boroughs, 9 counties and dependent areas.
The Chief of the state is Queen Elizabeth II since 6 February 1952; the Heir of the
Crown is Prince Charles, the son of the queen. He was born on 14 November 1948.
The Head of government is Prime Minister Tony BLAIR since 2 May 1997.
